Just got back from checking out one of my properties. Small bush lot only about 10 acres but, 75 acres of winter wheat on one side 350 acres of soya on the other. Have never shot deer here myself but friends have and Poachers . Saw several does and a couple of nice bucks just never in my shooting lanes. Beautiful property about 4 acres of grass and ceders the rest beach, oak, and maple.

Are the deer bedding on your parcel and eating next door ?

That is exactly what they are doing. I have to make a big circle in the field then come down a pre cleared trail to my stand. The main trail in the bush goes right thru the bedding area so I can't use it. There are guys that use to shot gun hunt this property. They would walk the main trail. Took weeks for the deer to come back in. They no longer have permission. Left to much junk behind and never offered anything to the landowner.

Sounds like you have the makings of a future gold mine there , dude .
I have a similar situation in that I live on 10 acres of woods with 80 untouched acres on one side , and non-hunting neighbors on all others . The 80 belongs to what I'm told is an older gent who won't allow hunting on it . Directly across the street is an active farm , currently planted in beans . If you looked at my place from the air it's like a big "X" with me in the middle since there is no cover other than windbreaks for at least a half mile in any direction . It has plenty of oaks , maple , and even a couple of persimmons , along with a semi-permanent "puddle" .
In your case they have a perfect place to sleep and eat , about the only thing lacking would be a water source . Is there a pond or creek nearby that you have or can get access to ? A small seep or two on the property itself , perhaps ? If so , I'd stake that out . They have to drink sometime , so guage the wind and set up nearby .

Actually there is a small creek that runs through it no alot of water in the fall but there is a big spring fed pond. When I was younger we actually played hockey on it. The problem is the bush runs north south. The pond is at the north end bedding area to the east open field and predominent wind to the west. It is very hard to hunt over the pond without getting busted. All the deer I have seen are either walking to it or away from it. Going to set up in a few different spots this year and keep trying. I have more productive propeties to hunt but this one is only 5 minutes away. I would really like to get one here so this year I'm going to try harder. There is a very large swamp about 5 miles deep and 10 miles wide that no one is aloud to hunt. Not a preserve just privatly leased from goverment and owners only use it for trapping and duck hunting. My small bush is the first bush to the north of this and alot of bucks use it every fall to get at does. The main reason I've never got one is up till this year I have spent most of my time hunting a little farther away. This year my oldest son wants to come out with me more often and if we hunt here wew will have more time in the woods.

I have similar plans for mine after some modest improvements to the mast . Your place is definitely a gold mine .
If you can't hunt directly over the pond or creek you may have to sneak closer to the beds and intercept them somewhere between the two , scent control and stealth would be critical for that . I like a product called Deer Danderâ„¢ as a scent cover when the wind isn't in my favor in addition to descenting in the shower . This seems to either not bother them as much or make them curious and come to investigate .
I would think your best bet for a good buck would be to set up where your land abuts the swamp and catch them as they wend there way to your little doe encampment during the rut . It would help if you could find your plot on Terraserver and post a pic , Woody can help you if needed . Map and topo would be nice if the ground isn't real flat .

Thanks for the tips very helpful. This property is imprinted on the back of my hand. I've been on it for close to 20 years. I started going in it when I worked on this farm as a 14 year old. At that time deer where few and far between in this area. There waas only a 3 day shotgun season thats how few there where. Know we can get our regular tag plus doe draw which is 100 percent in our wildlife unit. What I mean is if you apply for the tag you get it. Also 1 extra archery tag which is ethier sex. I could probably tell you where every tree is on this property and the scrapes and rubs are the same spot every year. The biggest problem I have is poachers. Two years ago I saw guys enter the property. Got out of my stand snuck out to my and car called the ministry. They where there within 1 hour. Told them where I saw guys go in. They where charged with tresspassing, huntung at night and other various offences. Last year didn't see anyone but me. Hopefully that is the end of poaching on property. Not the first time I saw this just got sick of it and did something about it!!!
