I already have a buck and two does in the freezer, but I still haven't been able to harvest a deer with my bow after four years of trying. I hadn't been out since the Shades SP late hunt, so I went hunting behind the house on Saturday morning for a nice late archery snow(ing) hunt. I didn't go out until about 9:00, and after about 45 minutes, this guy came by: Not exactly what I was after, but I got my first bow kill!

Nothing to be ashamed of there a coyote in bow range is a worthy trophy in my book!

Very nice, a coyote is harder to draw on and kill than most deer. I drew twice this season on them and got busted both times. Congrats

That is a great accomplishment for your first bowkill! Coyotes don't let you make many mistakes in bow range. I had a coyote coming in once, and he caught me merely shifting my wieght to a different leg when he was still 40 yards out!

Thanks all for the confidence boost.
He zig-zagged around and gave me a quartering towards shot at about 15-20 yards under a blow down. I think he sensed something was amiss right about the instant I let the arrow fly. The arrow entered just in front of the right leg, went along the breast bone, down the left leg, and exited about at the knee joint. He left a great blood trail (especially in the snow) and I tracked him probably 200 yards or so and put another arrow in him to finish him off. The second went in at the top of the neck and came out in the throat area. It ended up costing me 2 arrows - the first was all bent up from hitting the breastbone, and 2nd got crimped from him jumping around.
Oh well, a small price to pay for getting rid of a varmint. My kids are still missing their cat/kitten that disappeared back in August...

Same here, my first bow kill was a coyote. After a few years of not getting any shots at deer, I quit bowhunting for a long while. Last year I picked up my old bow, got some arrows from WalMart and shot my first deer on November 1st. She dressed out at 130 pounds. Keep at it, it will happen!
