Being new to hunting, I'm still learning some of the ins and outs. If hunting private land, can I hunt small game year around...or do the seasons for open hunting pertain to private land also?
I did read in the DNR site that nusance animals can be hunted year around...but are squirrels considered nusance animals...or is it at the land owners own descression as to what is a nusance or not?
Also, does private land need to be "outside city limits"?

Game laws apply whether you hunt public or private ground. Squirrels are small game animals and very unlikely to be considered nuisance animals. And, hunting land probably has to be outside city limits, depending on local ordinances. You'll have to check yours.

as far as asking permision, put on the land owners shoes. how would you like to be approached? personaly, i would prefer a knock on the door to a phone call. and make sure its at a decent time, not right after he gets home from work, not too late and try not to interupt dinner. I would'nt plan on running into his woods as soon as he says yes, and I probably wouldnt even bring the guns just to keep from looking over anxious. be very courteous, of course, since lots of people deer hunt, suggest maybe not hnting until before or after deer season, tell him if he has any other problems (like coyotes) that you would be more than willing to help if you see them while you are out, assure that you will call and ask anytime you want to come out. when asking permission to coon hunt, we have had landowners ask if they could come along bc they enjoyed it years ago or whatever and dont have anymore coon hunting friends. so you might even get a friend out of it, so suggest he's welcome to hunt with you
basicly, be over courteous, not anxious, polite and considerate, really nothing your mother didnt teach you

And don't wear camo. Taking a kid along can help as well.
