There is most probably a bunch of different factors in the percentage of 1.5 year old bucks, imo it might never get below 40%. A certain percentage of hunters are always going to shoot young bucks. I would be more concerned with what percentage are making it to 4 years and older, which we might never have any real data other than our individual knowledge. The hunters who want older bucks are making that jump and passing 2 and 3 year olds and it is showing..

The agng of deer (bucks and does) is done on opening weekend where a larger percentage will be older bucks. The "hunters who want older bucks" are passing the youngsters at least for the first week or so. So that would skew the age to older. Since that has been the process since day one it does establish trends. Not knowing how other states do it, it would be hard to compare. IOW - some states might do the aging all season and we only do it on the opening weekend. Not really and apples to apples comparison. Money constraints is the reason we don't do it all season..

Heres an idea, with land leasing to outfitters increasing at a high rate which will increase the amount out of state trophy hunters why not have the IDNR increase the out of state fees by $25.00 and make all non-residents kill a doe before they can kill a buck. This would manage the doe population on locked up land and increase revenue for the IDNR. If the non-resident trophy hunter didn't want the meat they could always donate it to Hunters for the Hungry program. h.h.

Nonresidents only accounted for 1.9% of the harvest. There is no need to raise prices until they become a bigger precentage.

Most of the leasing I hear of down in Owen County is leased by Hoosier residents. Most come from north of Owen County.

3rd or 13th I believe that it would mean that the INDNR is doing an outstanding job.
Clap on the back.

Yep, most leasing in our parts are done by residents, most from Indy area, and they aren't killing young bucks, so have at it. What would bother me is out-of-staters getting their money's worth and tagging out on that 2.5 year old buck before they leave, like what has plagued areas in Illinois.

Not going enter the whizzing contest here. all I got to say is Indiana'd deer hunting is getting better every year...you all can argue the reasons why, as long as I can keep seeing/tagging bigger bucks every year, I'm happy..Now if we can get the slaughter fest in firearms shortened and moved to the End of November and first of December, our hunting will improve some more..IMHO.

I think if we limited legal weapons to swords and knifes no shorter than 11.99999999999999 inches but not exceeding 6.234134232 feet and also shortened legal days to hunt to 1.4999934459 days with the above weapons our deer hunting would improve, IMHO. ;D

Kinda of like President Ronald Regan said once "Did ya ever see anyone wash a rental car before they take it back"? Same with landowners, if it's yours and you paid for it, you tend to manage for the future, and want to optimize quality hunting oppourtunities for all who hunt the land..Conservation...not" if it's brown it's down"....That's the mentality that's makes all hunters look like stupid slobs....not restraints, wanna kill everything, if it moves it's dead...That ignorance will be the downfall to our hunting rights someday.
