Personally - I think anything over an inch or two is a miss-measuremnt somewhere along the line..
I saw on Archery talk once her A guy claimed his grandpa shot a new worlds record. Come to find out the antlers were measurd by a novice and he included the tip to tip measurement and did not make any side to side deductions.

there was a deer killed by a guy named troy gentry off of fort knox a few years ago. it net scored just under 200 green. bass pro and cabelas offered x amount of money for this deer at that time. when it was officially scored it was in the range of 186 or 189. when this happened their price dropped by thousands of dollars. this deer lost 10 to 15 inches. one of two things...someones is BSing you, or the first scorer was way off.

It had to be measured wrong the 1st time. Think about it.....lose of moisture causes shrinkage. Do antlers have any moisture in them? Ever heard the phrase "dry as a bone"?

Gross and Net. The deer you reference above gross scored a tick under 200" and net scored 186 6/8". It didnt shrink during the drying period ....... the differences are gross and net. www.northamericanwhitetail.com/trophybucks/naw_0703fortknox/golly ... you would think Bass Pro and Cabelas would know there is a difference between the two

I agree that most of the shrinkage occurs because of faulty measurement on the green score. Most want to believe it will score higher than what it actually does. Official scorers don't and the score is done to be as accurate as possible. Now it's logical that a deer with a 250-300" NT rack might loose more than one with a 160" T rack by drying.
Yes, hard bone does shrink. They are dry but not bone dry until 60 days later or so.
Most typical racks will loose about 1/2" on spread at a minimum.
The Gentry buck was mismeasured on the first go around. Rumor was that the hunter did not agree with the official score. Not sure if that is true or not?

Plain and simple. Racks do not shrink to any signifcant degree. Like someone else said, inside spreads shrink a little (very little), but racks do not. The only shrinkage is either in the mind of the beholder, or in the mis measurement of the green scorer. I scored my own deer this year at a gross of 152 and a net of 148. I got it officially taped and the result was 149 3/8 and a net of 145 4/8. Did shrinkage occur? No. What happened was I over estimated the mass measurements. It was probably either me measuring over some nubs, in the wrong place, or just sort of unconsciously (and wishfully) bumping up my numbers a bit. I know this much, when I was measuring my own rack, I sure as heck wasn't going to come up short! You probably know what I mean

Man, just got in on this one, WOW. If your deer shrinks an inch that would be a tremendous amount of shrinkage. As far as I can tell the only shrinking the rack will do is the inside spread. Look at the skullcap sometime after your taxidermist has caped your deer. That little squiggly line in the center of the cap is what closes causing a shrinkage of spread. I have green scored a ton of deer that I have later officially scored and if there is an inch difference that is surprising.
Yes a 2x4 wedged between the antlers would keep the spread the same from green to net, but it might also cause the skullcap to break. Don't chance it for a couple fractions of an inch.
Any deer that looses over 2" obviously has a novice scoring it on either the green or net side.

You take any 2 scorers and I can guarantee you they will always be different on the final scoring result of a deer. It all depends on EXACTLY where you hold the cable. When I killed my first Boone and Crocket I (gross) green scored him at 194 4/8 the day after the kill. He officially (gross) dry scored 195 1/8 by another scorer after the 60day drying period. Scoring is not a science. Thats why when there is a world record involved it is panel scored.

You probably know what I mean Pardon me for replying to my own quote, but I just needed to say this about the above quote... I will wager this holds true when men get out the tape measure to measure "other things" as well.
