I've caught a 12" mooneye on a topwater buzzbait out of the White River, that looks like a large shad to me and I wouldn't eat it unless you like carp and such

i think that all smokers have the Surgeon General's warning below and behind the dorsal fin.

It is a shad, I fish Riddles lake alot in the summer and catch alot of them back there. Not good to eat. . Pretty sure it's a shad. Generally, the shad's dorsal fin is almost directly above the pelvic fin as your photo shows. A mooneye will have a dorsal fin toward the rear almost over the anal fin. The other thing that is a general note is the mooneye likes clearer water. Not sure what the clarity of the lake is where you're fishing - but I'd guess it's not "clear". For what it's worth, keep at it huntingman - you've already caught more fish than me this year!

i think that all smokers have the Surgeon General's warning below and behind the dorsal fin. LOL... yep, that is where I've seen it. My guess is a shad... good for strip bait. Guts make a good catfish bait..

It's a Goldeye, I don't see the black spot that is seen on gizzard shad or the long part of the dorsal fin. Either way you won't die if you eat one so try and let us know.
