I've used owl calls, crow calls and various turkey calls. The owl works well early in the morning. Crow call has never been too successful for me. My most success comes from a good yelp on a slate or box call. It may sound funny, but I've had as much success shutting a vehicle door as anything. Amazing how you can get a good gobble from something so simple!

I had a turkey over in Missouri that gobbled at; Barking dogs Thunder from an approaching storm Rooster crowing at a nearby farm house. A motorcycle going down a highway a mile off. A h gunshot a mile away. In fact this turkey would gobble at everything except..My turkey callingI guess he had heard that song before..

I could never get my vehicle 5 miles back onto the ridges in the hills I hunt..So you sit in your car and slam the door, or honk, and then what?...drive closer and slam again until you are close enough to get out and hunt..? Guess we know how you guys hunt.....Not too far from the car...lol...exactly why I hike in a long ways to hunt.. I don't use a locator much, if at all, Attracts other hunters to turkeys gobbling...I roost birds the night before and slip in before daylight.I hunt alot of Public land, so it's kind of a different game. less is more.

Well of course not silly. I carry a twelve volt battery and a car horn in my turkey vest.

Well of course not silly. I carry a twelve volt battery and a car horn in my turkey vest. You just never know where a bird is liable to roost. I've driven back a lane, parked the truck and got out. A bird flushed right over the top of me.... still dark out.

I don't use a locator much, if at all, Attracts other hunters to turkeys gobbling... I have two James Harrison owl hooters that I use at daylight, usually while approaching birds that are all ready gobbling. After that it is a lot of sitting and waiting. Very seldom I will break out the Cocobolo/Maple box that I carry. A bird that gobbles on his own later in the morning is a lot more likely to come in than a bird that shock gobbles once or twice.

As a matter of fact I'm thinkin about riding my motorcycle out on my first turkey hunt this season - gonna make a recording of a door slammin' since the bike aint got any doors...Oops wait - that would be a recorded call...Oh well back to sqaure one. LOL.

Well of course not silly. I carry a twelve volt battery and a car horn in my turkey vest. You just never know where a bird is liable to roost. I've driven back a lane, parked the truck and got out. A bird flushed right over the top of me.... still dark out. I try not to slam my door, a bird that might be close will definatley flush off the roost, if he's close...That being said, I've slammed my car door in the driveway here at home and had birds gobble in my woods behind the house...They will gobble at about any loud noise they hear..I know a guy who used a portable air horn to get birds to gobble around a Big Lake where barges frequented, so it was natural to the birds to hear that...and they gobbled...Over the years of hunting I learned a guy is better off to take the low impact approach in hunting. I try to remain low key and not to let other hunters know where I'm hunting..so any extra gobbling the turkey is doing is counter-productive for me..I hunt alot of Public Land. On private land where I know what's going on, will use a locator on occasion. I agree with Gobblestopper about sitting tight lipped and waiting..Woodsmanship is the key. Knowing what to do, when to do it, how to read the topography, knowing what a bird is thinking by his actions and vocalizations, knowing what they're food sources are and when they're using them...etc...etc..I use all these things first, then if I need my call....I might scratch off a few yelps, a cluck, maybe a purr depending on what I'm reading from the birds that particular morning..alot more to it than just grabbing a call and blowing it..IMO that's just the icing on the cake..

I actually prefer an owl hoot in the morning, more realistic for the sounds that you hear before sunrise. I don't use a call just my mouth, some practice and you can have it down in no time.
Midday I use either a crow call (limited success) or som nice loud yelps as others have mentioned.

Don't know about the "Wake up Tom!" part but that kind of looks like what we're hoping to use up in NH next year
