Official NWTF Scoring Formula To arrive at a score for your turkey under the current National Wild Turkey Federation scoring system, Follow these simple directions:
1. Multiply the Beard length by 2
2. Multiply the length of EACH spur by 10
3. Add the bird's total live weight
For example:
weight = 23lbs. X 1 = 23 spur #1 = 1" X 10 = 10 spur #2 = 1.25" X 10 = 12.5 beard length = 10.5" X 2 = 21
Total = 23 + 10 + 12.5 + 21 = 66.5 points

Anyone can get in the book....that is a good scoring bird! It is by no means a RECORD, but a GREAT BIRD. The scoring system screws you if you have a bird with: 14" beard, 1.25 spurs and weighs 21 lbs. You have good beard length, decent to small spurs and light weight. You see what I mean.....they charge you $10 bucks, I believe, and you send them the scoring sheet (NWTF) and then you good to go! They keep the following records for each sub-species:
1. Total score 2. Best overall typical score (1 beard, 2 spurs and weight) 3. Best overall non-typical score (2 beards, 4 spurs, etc, anything that is not outlined above) 4. Best weight 5. Best beard length 6. Best spur length
Good luck!!
