I just got my Deer and Deer Hunting magazine. It is one of only two that I still take. The other is the NRA American Hunter.
I was reading the letters to the editor and saw a reference to a previous edition and an article from John Trout. Now John is a long time hunting buddy of mine and I thought I must have missed the article as I was busy chasing turkeys.
I still had that edition so I pulled it from the magazine rack and started reading the article simply entitled “The Oak Tree”. Man, I knew exactly where that was as I, like everyone else in the Ebenezer Gang, had hunted it numerous times.
The first sentence baffled me in that it said, ”I’m readying for my 27th deer season.”
Hmm…. must be an older recycled article by John and John has been at this deer hunting game longer than I have.
The article was reading great. One of the best I had ever seen John write. VERY entertaining and bringing back some memories
I then read “Only weeks after my 17th birthday , I arrowed my first antlered buck from the tree.”
Whoa!! Wait a minute. I was with John when he bowkilled his first and he sure wasn’t 17.
I then went back to look at the first page again and saw the author’s name was John Trout III. This was written by John Trout Jr.’s son!
John Trout III, better known as Little John to all of us, is following in his dad’s footsteps as an outdoor writer and this is his first piece.
Nice surprise.
Good read… I recommend it.
