The IDNR (according to the newspaper article) is wanting to reduce the herd by 25%. They will be coming out with some changes that they hope will do the job.
The biggest factor will be getting hunters to kill more deer. So, with that in mind, will how many deer will you try and kill this year?
If that amount is higher than the past please post how many that you have killed in the past (on an average) and how many you are going to try and kill in the coming seasons.

I try to shoot as many as I can. There are years when I take 2 or 3 and years when I take 7+. I will continue to do this until the IDNR changes our season dates and structures. I will not continue to pull my weight if they shorten seasons or change their timing.

I will try to take as many as possible in southern Indiana, they are pretty hard on the soybean crops and alfalfa fields, give what I take to an Amish family [get a lot of summer sausage in return], but when I come home what do I do with any deer I take? Wife hates deer meat, and I have to cook it myself when she is gone for the day. Not having land to hunt on is not a problem for me, but it's like a dog chasing a car, what is he going to do with it after he nails it? With as many people on welfare, food stamps [?], unemployment, etc., a program to "dispose" of deer taken is going to have to be implemented. How? I have absolutely no idea, but there is a solution out there somewhere, it just has to be found.

I took 7 last year. I try to take 6-10 each year. The farmer wants me to kill a lot. Several years ago he lost half his alfalfa crop to deer. I show him everyone I kill. In October I can see 30 and evening in a field. Once nuts fall they disapper and it drops to 5-6 an evening.I donate to needy families here at school and eat them to.

I kill enough to fill our freezer which typically between my son and I around 6 or 7. We cut them up ourselves and eat nothing but venison until we run out. I meat hunt early on and late season, late oct and Nov we are trophy hunting. Usually if one of us takes a big buck we give it to a friend I work with who loves it but doesn't hunt. I see no need to kill something you do not use, seems greedy in a way. If there is a demand and you have friends or family asking for it is one thing but to kill just to be killing and then search for someone to take it is wrong. I know a few guys like that and it is not only greedy but wrong imo.

3; after only taking 1 last year I'm going to be bare by the time season rolls around. I don't do IN much good though as I don't think I've ever taken more than 1 here because of my KY hunting. If I get a request for one I may end up shooting for 4.

I usually shoot 3 one for my brother who does not hunt because his eyes are bad one for my sister who's son I'm trying to teach to hunt but can't hit the broad side of a barn and one for me.

As many as I can...and/OR feel like messing with (also cut them all up myself!)!
BTW - I usually take 4-7 myself & then my youngest usually adds at least 1.

Sounds like you need to spend a little more time teaching your nephew to SHOOT before you try to teach him to HUNT! In my experience IF a kid has the patience to stick it out long enough hunting to get an opportunity at a deer...then NOTHING can turn them off faster than MISSING when that time comes!! Not saying that it still doesn't happen sometimes anyway...I just think that they should learn to shoot first - hunt second. Just my humble 2ยข.

New member. Thanks for a great site and a place to voice our opinion's. Just curious do the states brillant minded biologist's factor in the increased number's of hunter's each year and more liberal bag limits and not just the fact that more deer are harvested to come up with that indiana's deer herd is growing? . I hunt primarily in switzerland county on a private 150 acre farm. The county bag limit's are so high and number of hunter's keep's increasing i find it very hard to believe that the deer herd is increasing in my area. Deer sighting's these last two season's are down dramatically. We manage number of taken on our farm, put out 7 plus acre's food plot's , mineral lick's etc. to keep deer on our land but the hunting pressure is extremely heavy. I am a strong supporter of the O.B.R. and even if given the oppurtunity to shoot an additional buck would choose not to. Just my 2 cents. Again thanks for such a great site.

My goal this year is at least 3 for my freezer. I won't be going west this year to chase Elk, Muleys etc so I will need to offset that with more whitetail in the freezer plus we are expecting a boy in Sept so the growing family will need more venison!

I am not questioning any one person here however that said. Let me say that if all of you are taking that many deer every year then there is a problem here with the DNR stats and the vast majority of the deer hunter are not killing any deer as opposed to the number that the DNR seze take deer in fact the state average per successful hunter is only two deer . So if there is this many hunters on the average taking what looks to be the average of 5 deer a year then only about 20% of all deer hunters are scoring on deer!! So I must question and will run a poll on this as it seems that everyone here takes at least 3 .
M<akes a man say Hummmmmm!
May the OBR die by the way!! LOL

I take 1 or less each year. Probably won't take more unless they drasticly reduce the price structure for NR's. Can't afford $150 for a doe to give away.

Over the past 10 years I have taken as many as 4 and as few as 0 with an average between two or three a year. We don't eat as much venison as usual so I will probably stop at 1 and hunt for a second one if the urge hits.

LOL I read a stat somewhere that said something like 80% of the deer harvested is by the same 20% of hunters, year after year...I'm sure most guys on here kill multiple deer if they want to. I'm also sure there are plenty of guys out there that don't kill any, or one if they are lucky. Guys posting on websites like this in May take deer hunting serious....but there are tons of guys out there that dont get the gun out of the closet until opening morning. Check out walmart the night before season comes in. There is usually a line of people buying tags and slugs. Those are they type guys who bring the hunter sucess numbers down.

I usually tag between 2 and 5 deer per season. I try not to take button bucks, and I usually let the small bucks walk. We start sept 15th (urban) and go thru the end of muzzleloader season.
