Well, this is a little late, and I just realized that the pictures are NOT on this computer I DID take pictures, honest!!!
On May 3rd, I harvested my first turkey, here in the woods behind the house. By the time that I made it to the check station, they were closed, so I stuffed the bird in the deep freeze and registered it the next day.
The next day, after spending 22 hr in the freezer, it weighed 25# 12 oz., the beard measured 11 3/4" long and the spurs were both 24mm (and really sharp!)
Woody, it was also the first critter that I took with a crossbow. ;D
The bird was facing me @ 22 Yds, and I held just to the left of the beard and squeezed the trigger. The bird jumped a good 3' in the air and flopped a bit with a broken wing. Then it got up and walked past me, going another 20 Yds before settling to the ground. It took another 15 minutes for it to finally put it's head down and close it's eyes. I was afraid to re-string the crossbow for fear that it would take off. The bolt entered just to the left of the base of the beard, penetrated the whole bird (splitting the tail in half vertically) and stopped with the broadhead sticking out the rear by 4" or so.
100 gr. Hypershock 2 blade mechanical. The blades are a bit tattered because it cut thru a LOT of bone. I took the bird to Harry Rust in Knox, and he was able to save the tail for a mount. I stopped off at his house on that Wed. after registering the bird, and he removed the tail and beard. Sunday he called and said that the mount was done. Here's what it looks like:
I wonder what it would have weighed the day before? The check station said that the largest bird to date (5-4-2007) was 26# and had 26mm spurs.
Maybe I should enter the contest next year? His twin brother is still out there..... ;D
