ok, i am very confused about the youth hunt this weekend. i am not sure how the whole youth license thing goes. as of right now i have my buck tag and bonus tag for the start of this season. i am wanting to take a 13 year old hunting this weekend for the youth. they have never taken a hunters course. my questions are......what license do they need? what is it good for (buck or doe)? can they hunt all season with me or just the 2 days this weekend with the license? if someone can please explain this to me i would appreciate it. i have searched everywhere for the info and i am so confused. i know you guys will have all the answers. thanks in advance!

I think he/she needs an apprentice license which enables him or her to hunt a full year without having to take HE.
During the youth only weekend they are allowed either a doe or buck, not both just one. If they happen to shoot a buck, its their one buck for the entire season.

They have the same harvest restrictions on that weekened as another day during the season - they can take as many does as each county allows. The do not have to have HE until they use up their allotment of apprentice licenses; although after the first season if the kid really likes it I would recommend getting them into a course.

Maybe this will help: www.in.gov/dnr/fishwild/2343.htmand www.in.gov/dnr/fishwild/files/fw-deerhuntguide.pdfYouth deer hunting season is Sept. 24 and 25. Youth age 17 or younger on the date of the hunt, and accompanied by an adult of at least 18 years of age, can take one deer of either sex during this special youth deer season. If the youth hunter takes an antlerless deer during this season it is in addition to any antlerless deer taken during any other season. If the youth hunter takes an antlered deer during this season, they may not take another antlered deer during the regular archery, firearm, or muzzleloader seasons. The youth hunter and accompanying adult must possess a valid hunting license. Apprentice Licenses An individual of any age, resident or non-resident, can buy an apprentice hunting license without having to take a hunter education class. An individual can purchase up to three ap¬prentice hunting licenses, of any combination, in his/her lifetime. While hunting, the apprentice hunter at all times must be in close proximity to and be able to communicate with a hunter who is at least 18 years old and has a valid hunting license (unless exempt from needing a hunting license). The individual who accompanies the apprentice hunter cannot accompany more than two ap¬prentice hunters at one time while afield.

I still don't get why the adult needs a hunting license if they are not allowed to carry a weapon!

I still don't get why the adult needs a hunting license if they are not allowed to carry a weapon! $$$$$$ I guess that they think if a person has a license that they are capable of teaching a kid? BTW - While youth hunting you can exercise your right to carry if you have a permit.

Several aspects of the youth hunt are why they are because of certain stakeholder input during the designing days of this event. There are several barriers built in that inhibite particapation, and they need to be removed for the good of the sport.
1. Makes no sense why a youth can not take a full bag limit instead of limited to one deer 2. Mentor needing license 3. Poor time of year for inexperienced hunters to be afield.

You need a deer license, the youth needs an apprentice youth consolidated hunt/trap license. The youth can take either a buck or a doe but not both(if the youth shoots a buck he or she can not shoot a buck during the regular deer seasons). During the reg. deer seasons follow the regular deer season rules.

i think its fair to allow just one deer, come on how many kids are going to be able to just sit and wait after they shot a deer, some their first deer of their lifetime.
What you'll get if you allow that kid to shoot his bag limit is a bunch of dad's and uncles out blasting deer and having the kid tag it. It already happens during the youth hunt. Dang sad too

If you know of violations such as that, then you need to call in on them. Bag limits should be the same for all hunters, regardless of age.

thanks so much for all the replies! you guys are great! i do have a few more questions though just to clear up everything......you guys said if the youth shoots a buck during the youth season that they are not allowed another the rest of the season so what if they shoot a doe? my county allows 4 antlerless deer so would that mean that the youth can take only 3 more anterless deer the rest of the season? if i have a deer tag is that all i need to take the youth hunting? and is the youth license good all the way until january? and can the youth hunt with me anytime during all the deer seasons? rules rules rules.......this stuff gets confusing but i dont want to do anything wrong and get popped. thanks again for all the info!

Geez cant even talk about the youth hunt without bringing up stakeholders
