People on here keep saying how we need to reduce the deer herd. I am just curious how many people think it is necessary in their hunt areas. I for one think it would be harmful to the deer where I hunt. I am sure that some areas of the state need a reduction and others don't.

I have no idea. This is like asking "would you like to see less deer when you go hunting?". Most people are going to say no.
The deer I see and take look healthy to me. Maybe the area could handle more, I don't know. How many is enough without being too many?

Nope! Year around sightings in my area is about right. Don't see em everytime afield & usually no more than 5 per sighting on different parts of the farm.

I don't know of anywhere in the state that over population is affecting the health of the herd. I could be wrong

None of them look skinny to me, when you see a fawn during late winter fatter than fat. I think that means you DON'T need reduction

Where we hunt it is not over populated. Then again how often do you see deer standing around in an open field? I can show you a 12 mile strech of road where a deer is hit every couple days(all year long) Talking to the farmers and looking at the trails the deer cut through their fields, I would say if they are not overpopulated then they are getting close.
I am trying to do my part though. Just loaded up some .357 max 180gr Hornadys ;]

I was just looking at my hunt log so far this is how my season is going:
Hunts = 18 Hours on stand = 54 Deer seen = 5 Bucks seen = 5 Does seen = zero Shots = zero 54 hours x 5 deer = 1 deer per 10.8 hours on stand. I am on vacation now until nov 21st. Things have got to get better. This has been pretty much the norm for the last 5 years. 2 years ago I had a stretch where I went 11 times in a row without seeing a deer. I am up to 7 this year right now. I just keep pluggin away and hopefully it will happen sometime. I say what does a deer look like?

I chose yes, it's nothing to hunt for days no end and see countless does but never get a glimpse of a buck. I know they're there from the rubs and scrapes but I guess maybe it's bad timing on my part. Way too many does though!

Where I do my firearms and muzzleloader hunting, I have only seen 2 or 3 does in the last 3 years. I see small bucks and buttons a lot and a really nice buck about every two years. By the shooting I hear, the area I hunt gets hunted pretty hard the first week to week and a half of firearms season.

I dont think anywhere needs a 'doe reduction" per say. What the whole state needs is constant hunting pressure during deer season to keep the deer population at an acceptable level.
Because hunters get old and at sometime will quit hunting the state is challenged to take steps to keep deer hunting "alive and well". If we don't take steps to recruit new folks into the sport it will die a slow death and deer will multiply like cock roaches.
Youth only hunts, expanding weapon choices and bag limit adjustments are all proactive steps that need to be made so we dont have top pay sharpshooters to reduce the herd.

So far this season I have seen:
Sit 1 – 8 Does and fawns
Sit 2 – 1 doe
Sit 3 - 21 does and fawns and 1 3 pointer (Illinois) 7.3 per hour
Sit 4 – 10 does and fawns and 1 spike
Sit 5 - 7 does and fawns
Sit 6 – 4 does and fawns
Sit 7 – 6 does and fawns and 1 4 pointer
That is 57 does and fawns and 3 “bucks”.
Both Indiana and Illinois - I average a three hour sit so that is 21 hours and I’ve seen 60 deer (I’m sure some are the same deer) so I am averaging 2.86 deer per hour seen.
Indiana only - 2 .67 deer per hour

14 sits. I would say I average about 3 hours a sit right now.
48 does and yearlings seen
18 Antlered bucks seen.
66 deer over the course of maybe 42 hours. 1.57 deer per hour.

You are doing better than me. I have been out 5 times and seen 8 deer total on stand. 2 bucks and 1 bb and 5 doe but only saw the deer on 2 times out.
But it is getting to be prime time now and I expect to start seeing more each time out.

I average one deer seen per entire day while actually hunting(average sit of 3-4 hours morning and night). Now, last night at 6:40 p.m. we saw a herd of 10 does all sizes kicking it up in a field, just a 1/2 mi from our house. I only get to go out one more time til I have to get back to working...........I really hope that the end of next week will be HOT with deer activity when I am off again!
