Well heres the story. I recently harvested a nice buck in Pike County IL, pictures are posted here and Im proud of the buck. I also mentioned that I had 3 other HUGE bucks come in on me. One of the bucks was by far the largest I have ever seen on hoof. I took pictures of it, but the photos are not the best due to phone quality. Anyrate, Ive been replaying the moment in my mind day after day because this buck was in a totally different class of its own. I shot my buck and literally 30 seconds later this buck was broadside 20 yds from me. Come to find out the landowner called me tonight and said another hunter heard me shoot my buck and heard it crash. Most people would have never let this buck walk, but I couldnt in honest faith shoot it because Im not that way. Im sick as a dog..but I can honestly say I let a 200" inch buck walk.

BTW...this buck will be in some magazines, it was greened around 230 I think. The picture from my phone is poor and you cant tell anything about the rack, but believe me I seen it.

Don't feel bad. Chances were good that if you had passed your first deer you'd never have seen the others. If a man waited on a 200 incher he'd be waiting a while. And if you had shot the second deer you'd be a dirty rat anyway, and you proved you weren't.
One time I shot a doe when I had only one bow tag. Seconds later a book deer wandered by and stood around. I could have shot him and nobody would have known the difference. But I would have.

None of us knew the buck was in the area. It never crossed my mind to shoot. Im sick because I had a buck of a lifetime in front of me and could do nothing...

Lyman13 just think of this, some of us have never even seen a buck anywhere near 200 inches. I would cherish that memory. Congrats on a great season so far.

bit cornfused, which bucks are which and who shot what? Your not the first to have to let a giant walk and not the last, been there

I let the giant walk because I just tagged out 30 seconds before he came down the trail. I still had bow in my hand watching my buck run off. I heard my buck crash and and looked over and seen the big one coming up the ridge. He got 15 yds broadside of me. I took several terrible pics but make no mistake it was him.... I was in awe.
Clarification.... I "didnt let" him walk. I didnt shoot because I didnt have a legal tag. I just tagged out 30 seconds earlier. Im happy and privleged to have harvested a nice buck. Just a "what if" moment.

I dont know the exact percentage, but there are a lot, few however one operationalizes it that would have shot the deer of that caliber. Funny thing is Ive been asked more than not why I didnt shoot it. No brainer to me. Called temtation and is the exact reason why pharmacisits steal medications, pedophiles etc stray from fundamental morals.
