Well the Lord blessed me with a chance at a decent buck Saturday morning. And the Ruger 77/44 and I did our part and sealed the deal. Got in stand around 5:30 a.m. and at around 6:15 i could hear something walking slowly behind me in a small thicket, I looked behind me on both sides and could not spot what it was, figured it may have been a coon that found his tree, since it just stopped. Well the heart rate settles back down and I start settle back in to my Viper. At 6:45 i look at my phone to check the time and see that my girlfriend has texted me asking "how's it going out there" I reply " Ok, pretty nice out maybe not for deer hunting but, Relaxing" She said is it not cold out and I replied "50". and as soon as I hit send I hear something trotting through the woods to my back left, Its a deer and starting to pick up speed, so i grab my rifle and hit my grunt tube once pretty stiff. It slams on the breaks! of course the only part I could see was the hind quarters, so I softly hit the grunt two more times and it slowly steps out around a tree, It's a Buck! I had passed on a pretty decent 8 on opening morning and hadn't seen any bucks besides spikes and couple small six ponters since then. I slowly raised my rifle and zoom my scope in to check him out, I can see his left side of his rack perfectly and count 1,2,3,4,5,.. that,s enough for me this dude is goin down! I steady my crosshairs and squezzed, I see him do the death kick then bolt towards the field, then heard him crash. Could not see where he fell so I sat for 30 minutes. Replaying it in my head, i was 99% sure i hit him good but you never know. finally climbed down and slowly worked over to the spot where he was standing when i shot. Halfway there I see him laying 5 yds from field edge. He only ran 27 yds, his right side brow was broke off as well as a bit of his main beam, but that doesnt bother me one bit, just means he like'd to cause a little ruckus now and then, lol.
It's been a couple seasons since I have had a chance at a decent buck and am pretty happy with him. I am also really pleased with the .44 performance. this is the first year i have been hunting with it and both deer i have shot have not ran more than 30 yds with good blood.
