Hello guys/gals.
Based on the recent topic in the hunting forum, I have a newby question.
Say you are hunting on public land and you have done your scouting and had a couple places picked out. You head to your first place, hunt for a couple hours then pick you stuff up to move to your second place. Say you pass by another hunter, obviously upsetting him. What should you have done in this situation? Should you stay in your first spot all day even though you aren't seeing anything or do you freely move about to your next spot.
The reason I ask, I was hunting at Fort Harrison Monday and Tuesday and I moved around a couple times cause I didn't feel I was in a really good spot. Now I did not scout the area, so I didn't really know where to go, except for what TurkeyScout had told me. Both days I was there, I only saw one other hunter, so it really didn't matter. Actually, the other hunter was just walking to his spot as well.
I think next year I am going to take the approach of go all the way to the back and let other hunters push them to me. HA HA!
Thanks for the info. Mike

Have faith in your set-ups if you did proper pre-season scouting. Different stand locations are usually more productive during different times of the day based on what part of the season you are hunting.
You will always encounter other folks on public land. Watch & listen to what is going-on around you. Pay attention to everything that you hear & how the critters react to it. It could be the sounds of another hunter. When moving around, constantly scan forward, side to side, & up into the trees.
When I encounter folks I always wave, pat my chest (my bad), & back out as quitely as possible & go around.

If you are hunting during gun season on public property, it really doesn't matter if you sit it out or move to another spot. There are soooo many people in the woods that more than likely any deer movement will be the result of the deer being bumped by another hunter.
I used to get torqued up when another hunter walked through the area I was hunting. I always felt like some jackwagon was messing up my hunt. I always wanted to enjoy the solitude that comes with being alone in the wilderness. The problem is that there are a million other men and women out there looking for the same feeling.
So my attitude about running across other hunters in the woods has changed a lot over the years. I still feel badly when I bump another hunter. I know how I used to feel. But now I see a kindred spirit looking for the opportunity to enjoy some time alone in the woods.

Well, I never like to move around much no matter if I'm hunting public or private land. I have a real hard time hunting a spot "blind". I like to have a general idea of what's going on before I actually hunt an area. I continue to "scout" throughout the season. If I'm not real happy with a spot I'm hunting on public ground, I may wait until the prime time passes, and then do some quick low impact scouting. Just my 2 cents, but probably worth a lot less.

Man, ever since I got my new summit goliath, all I want to do is move around. I have to keep telling myself to stay and be patient, but my will to move always overcomes my smarter side.

I actually enjoyed myself out there. I will be doing it again next season.

Boy... I wish I had some private land to hunt.
It's all filled with either family people or people with money that lease it all.
I have permission to hunt ONE little piece of private land in Orange county. And I really use it for access to public land. I have never killed a deer on it.
I am jealous of you guys with private spots.

I've hunted Big oak's and park hunt's a few time's and won't ever go back. Guy's fumbling through the wood's, shooting at any thing that move's plus all the silly rule's you have to follow. Not worth it to me as I have plenty of place's to hunt with alot better hunting then any public groung I know of here in Indiana. And yes I'm thankfull for what I have and hope to purchase another farm in the next couple year's.

I've hunted public ground in the past, 15 or so years of it, i never minded seeing other hunters as long as its not at the break of daylight or shortly after. Those are the ones, i'd like to ask, WTF are you thinking? Granted its just as much their land as it is mine, but hunters don't hunt like that. Some folks wanna shoot deer, others like to HUNT deer.

Public land isn't so bad you just gotta go further than anybody else wants to go.

OK you got me, WTF are you thinking? As you acknowledge, no person has more rights than others on public land. Why do you consider sitting a stand to be HUNTING, and other methods just "shooting deer". I've shot plenty on stands and maybe as many by other methods. Some of my best hunts were still hunts.

I never mentioned anything about setting in a stand. But walking around on public property shortly after daybreak is not smart, safe and shows a total lack of respect to other hunters.

I have hunted over a mile from any road this year and saw more hunters than if I would have set up closer to the road. More people are thinking that way these days I guess. We ended up shooting 2 bucks about 75 yds into the woods. Guess other hunters pushed them our way. You just cant hunt public land without running into other hunters these days. Twice I had hunters setup within 30 yds of my stand this year. I guess they were thinking the same thing about the spot I was hunting, it looked killer, but after all the traffic,it cooled off real quick.

I've ran into more hunters on private land than on public land the last few years. Heck, I just got back from duck scouting on public land and there wasn't 1 hunter out there on over 3,000 acres. Seen plenty of trucks pulled off on private property though. I personally don't like to move around much on public land and never do if I think someone else is in the same area.

This season I had 2 guys come in on me wearing jeans and hunter orange sweatshirts at 10am on the opening day of shotgun, I thought they were trailing a deer, then one of the guys sits down about 80yrds away from me and the other one came and sat dow 35 yards away from me. I whistled at him and stood up in the stand and held my arms out an he just kept sitting there. They stayed for about an hour the walked off. I was pretty upset. Sometimes there is just no common courtsey.
