Friday evening I asked my girlfriend if she would like to sit with me Saturday morning for the opener of MZ season. She is a non hunter but is learning how obsessive I can be with hunting. Not only is she a non hunter but she is born and bred a "city" girl and knows nothing of the ways of us lunatic hunters.
She sat with me one evening during archery. We got into a buddy at about 4:30. It was a windy day and I wasn't expecting to see much. She sat very still and quiet until about 5:30 when she unexpectedly let out a VERY loud cough. lol It was so loud in fact I was looking away from her when she did it and it startled me. I looked over and she very sheepishly said "sorry". lol about then a deer started blowing at us. I wasn't going to make a big deal over it but when I looked over at her, her eyes were wide as saucers and she said WHAT is THAT? I laughed and said its a deer thanking you for letting it know we were here.
So anyway Saturday morning we headed out again to a buddy stand. A doe and fawn came thru early. Not spooked but moving along at a good clip. I said I wouldn't be surprised if a buck is pushing them. Sure enough about 5 minutes later a little 6 pt came thru nose to the ground on the trail of the doe and fawn. She thought that was pretty cool.
A few minutes later she asked why I didn't shoot the doe. I said since there aren't a lot of deer back here I wont shoot one unless we have several come in together.
From there she caught up on her sleep until about 8:45 when I saw a deer coming down a hill towards us. I nudged her awake and said there's another deer. When I looked back there was another and another and another... ended up being 6. So I grabbed the Encore and said I'm going to shoot one are you ready for this?
We had talked earlier about how she would react to seeing one actually being shot. She said yeah I'm ready go ahead...
They made their way closer and I picked out the biggest for about a 40 yard broadside shot. At the shot the deer jumped a couple of steps then stopped and stood there looking around. The other 5 did the same thing. Ive never missed with the Encore but I know it could happen and I was just beginning to doubt my shot when the doe tried to take a step and she looked like she had one too many beers at the local watering hole. After that she just sank down to her belly and then over onto her side and she was done.
Perfect for a newbie to see I thought. The deer didn't even know it had been shot and went out quiet and easy.
Crystal watched the whole field dressing episode and even helped me drag it to the 4 wheeler. Her only comment was, do you have to bounce her head around like that! ;D I said you have to remember its meat now not a living animal. She just smiled.
Pretty fun morning. no it didn't convert her into a hunter but she for sure has a better understanding of the whole process now instead of just enjoying the back straps and burgers.
While we were taking this picture she kind of laughed to herself. I said whats so funny? She said should I tell all your buddies how much you were shaking when you were reloading your gun after you shot her? I laughed and said YUP!
