I talked to Mr. Brown at the Boat sport and travel show Sunday. My barrel was just shipped and he should have the gun done in a few weeks.

At the recent Indiana Deer and Turkey Expo A.J. Brown Arms (email alan@ajbrownarms.com 812-384-1056) had for sale a good supply of commercially loaded .358 Hoosier ammo with 200 grain Hornady FTX and 200 grain Hornady Interlock spitzer bullets. He expects to also have some ammo with 180 grain Hornady Interlock spitzer bullets at the next Indy 1500 Gun Show (March 16-18). Some premium loaded ammo with 180 or 200 grain Barnes TSX bullets may be available by late March. Ammo can also be shipped to the customer at very reasonable cost via USPS flat rate box.

Really thinking of going this way with a NEF Handi rifle, need to find a barrel. Just a heads up on shipping ammo via USPS I just inquired about it the other day and it is a no go. They will ship components but not loaded ammo.

They may ship ammo from an FFL, but not for sure. UPS is the only method for individuals to ship loaded ammo that I know of.

They may ship ammo from an FFL, but not for sure. UPS is the only method for individuals to ship loaded ammo that I know of. A.J. Brown personally checked at the Post Office and talked with a Postal Inspector. As an FFL holder he can ship loaded small arms ammo via USPS as long as he puts a label on the package showing the letters ORM-D (indicating Other Regulated Materials, but not specifically stating small arms ammo inside). I believe all ORM-D packages ship by ground only -- not air. Lots of companies and FFL holders ship ammo this way. I recently got a package (with factory loaded ammo inside) from Graf & Sons shipped by FedEx and it also had the ORM-D label on it. Also, the Post Office does not charge any extra just because a package has the ORM-D label

I picked up my Savage Model 10 that AJ Brown re-barreled to 358 Hoosier. Looks real nice. Waiting for the dies to arrive from Hornady and I'll be shooting.

I don't have a camera that I can connect to my computer, but if you've seen one Savage Model 10, you've seen them all. Pretty plain, stained wood stock, 24 inch barrel. When I said "looks real nice" I was referring to the work AJ Brown did. The barrel contour is pretty close to the factory barrel. He cut a nice recessed crown and did a good job matching the bluing of the action.
The gun itself is never going to be a looker. Like they say, you can't turn a pig's ear into a purse (or, you can't make chicken salad from chicken sh*t).

If you are using the Hornady .358 Hoosier FL sizing die to initially form cases be sure to FIRST shorten the parent case to about 1.80 to 1.85 inches long. [Cleanly and consistently cutting the parent case to about 1.790 inches on a LATHE works well for me.] Chamfer the case mouth and then you can run it into the Hornady FL die. If you do not shorten the parent case first it will be too long to fit inside the Hornady die. This is due to the design of the Hornady die.
Of course, after forming the Hoosier case you will need to final trim to length a few thousandths below 1.800 inches (suggest 1.795 inches) and chamfer the mouth. Then check the empty, formed, and trimmed case in the chamber of your rifle to be sure it will chamber properly. I would suggest running one case through all the steps, taking and recording measurements as you go, to see what works best for you. You don’t want to ruin a whole bunch of cases!

Good advise, thanks! I bought 20 cases from AJ brown to start off with. Actually I don't shoot a whole lot, so these 20 will last me quite a while.

My friend and I dropped off 2 Savages today for Alan to rebarrel at the Antlertalk.com show. Looking forward to seeing the results of his work. Also interested in anyone else that has one to keep us updated on loads and performance.

Made the jump today and ordered an Encore frame. Anybody got an idea of what the ideal barrel length would be?

Man that is a short little barrel. I found a used Savage 243 for 250 at a local gun shop may have to make the jump after I hear how they are shooting.
