Good point. If the only other difference is.100-200 fps mv, then it comes down to ammo. And your skill to reload and or to make your own brass. Also, the price for custom dies. And how many rounds you expect to shoot to justify setting up to reload or buy loaded ammo

I chose the 358 Hoosier for simplicity of the conversion and ease of obtaining/making brass.
Including custom dies ($163 to my door) I have about $550 in my rifle. I already had the Model 10 308, and I can easily switch back to 308 if the mood strikes me.
Loaded ammo is available from a few sources, so for now perhaps a better option for non reloaders than some other wildcats.

Ordered forming dies and FL dies from Hornady today for the 1.8" .358 Grant . I did their 1.625" and it was some work but not that bad. You don't need that much brass, 25 to 50 will last a life time. Once a load is developed you only shoot a couple rounds a year. I look at it like everything else in life, "Be the best you can be and don't settle for less.

From what I can find this round has the best ballistics. That is why I asked the question to see if any one else knew of a better one. I've been looking at this for a couple of months and could not find a better one. Thanks.

Would you care to share 358 GRANT 1.8 ballistic info here?
I have a Savage M16 in 358 BFG using the 1.625 case that I am awfully fond of.

I found the info on shooters forum under wildcats. The 358 BFG is a good round, but it won't touch it.

The Grant can be pushed harder than the wssm/bfg without a doubt .... but IMO they are close enough to be interchangeable in the real world.
When you find a load your rifle likes .... and that is suitable for hunting whitetail deer ..... you are going to end up with a 180-225gr bullet going somewhere between 2500-2900fps using either the wssm/bfg or the Grant.

swilk is right. The 180 pills will be around 2800 fps and the 225 around 2550 -2600 fps. Drop at 400 yards between the Grant and the WSSM or BFG wont be enough to worry about. Dont rely on ballistic tables and shoot the actual distance you plan on hunting. h.h.

With my 358BFG 1.625, I'm getting 2600fps using 200 grain FTXs. And honestly speaking, for me, recoil is just below the threshold level that would begin to negatively impact my shooting. This load develops about 3000ft-lbs of energy. That is a shade more than an '06 which generates 2800-2900ft-lbs of energy depending on which bullet. I'm not so sure that, at least for me, the additional 200-300fps of bullet velocity would be worth the trade off in "shootability" Especially under conditions in the field.

Buy brass in a lot of 100. Make sure you get the same lot number so that you'll have more consistancy.

Actually, lot is not that important with the WSSM because of all the case prep you do to it. Winchester is the only manufacturer of WSSM brass.
Ive reloaded some of my brass over 25 times and its still going strong. I anneal after every 5th reload. The chambers are so tight that the brass doesnt get worked very hard at all. h.h.

Remington, Federal, Norma and nosler make WSM brass.
Different lots from any manufacturer can have different wall thickness and have different case capacity as much as 3-5 grains of water.
