Looking for the best deer rifle that can be had for Indiana. Most important is range and knock down. Any ideas? Price does not mater.

I love the Handi-Rifle .357 Mag I got for my daughter. I think I will use it some myself. It should be good out to around 100 yards. The .44 Mag would get you a little more power. Fun guns to shoot and accurate right out of the box with very little kick.

I was wanting something with a more range. I have a Handi-rifle in 44 , and there is nothing wrong with it. Just looking for a little more power and range. Thanks

Go with one of the wildcats. Next best in a standard caliber would likely be the .460 S & W.

358 BFG or 358 WSSM, either one will kill out to 400 yards. Do a research on here for more info. h.h.

For an 'off the shelf' rifle, I'd probably go with a Ruger 77 in 44mag. Good to about 150 yards max and plenty of killing power.
A much better choice if you can swing it would be a custom bolt action rifle in one of the wildcat type loads developed for IN such as the 35 IDC. It will get you a little more range, plus you can get a full length rifle barrel as opposed to the short barrel carbines like the Ruger 77 and Marlin and Henry lever guns.

What about the Bushmaster 450?

The 450 bush, and 460 S&W would both be good cartridges. If you reload, the 35 rem, 358 win, 45-70, and 450 marlin all shoot excellent with shortened cases. I've owned or shot 6 different Handi rifles with very poor accuracy problems. The Marlins and Brownings have shot very well.

358 BFG/WSSM best meets your 2 most important criteria.

In the new 1.8" wildcats which one is the tops. I think that I'm going that way.

The 358 Hoosier has good numbers but I'm sure where to get one.

A 358 Hoosier can be built easily with a Savage Model 10 donor action, and a new barrel chambered for the cartridge. Simply swap the barrel and go. A guy that has no experience with swapping barrels can get that done by about any gunsmith. AJ Brown in Bloomfield IN did mine. He has a website.

Thanks There is not much difference in any of the .358 WSSM cartridges with the Grant being made off a WSM case. You can get about 2 grains more powder in the Grant with equals 100 fps or so. Just Hunt in Wabash sells the 358 WSSM guns, cases or loaded ammo. h.h.

I shoot a .375 Whisper which meets IN requirements and has been an excellent weapon. Had it built when the regs first changed, before all of the 35's were in the mix.
Had mine built from a Tikka T-3 bolt action rifle, re-barrelled and re-worked for this caliber. I am well pleased. Longest kill has been 205 yards, but I know wht the gun does out to 300 yards.
