My buddy owns 46 acres in Jay county, that only the 2 of us hunt. Twice he has seen a "neighbor" tresspassing on his land. Once he saw him from a treestand, and yelled at him to leave as he was trespassing. The guy left. Then 2 days later, my buddy was in his stand and could here someone walking and shooting a gun about every other minute. Gradually the sounds were in his woods and not very far away, then a succession of shots. My buddy climbed down just in time to see the guy crossing the fence off of his property. He contacted the Jay county Sheriffs Dept. and they told him "There's nothing we can do unless we are there when he does it". WHAT A CROCK! My buddy gave him the creeps name and address and asked if they could at least go and ask him if he did it and maybe put a scare into him. They said "No we don't have time for that." It's Jay county, what else could they possibly have to do? My main stand is in the front of the property and easy to find and I noticed, after never spooking a deer, and seeing many, the deer started skirting it big time. It just makes me wonder if he was hunting my stand. Well I just wanted to vent.

There are a few ways you can handle this. Keep a cell phone with you, prefferabley one with a camera. Get the tresspassers picture and then hit 5 on your speed dial. You do have 1-800-TIP-IDNR on speed dial dont you? Call the TIP line instead of the sheriff. It's been my experience you get a better response from TIP.
Have your buddy give you permission to hunt his property in writing and keep it on you. I have a permission to use form on my other pc, if you are interested let me know and I will email it to you.
Place a trail cam on the fenceline with the flash covered.
Lastly, but probably most important, get to know the local CO. I recommend this to everyone, get to know the CO in the area(s) you hunt. Explain the problem and show him the permission to use form.
lastly, invite the CO to hunt your buddies property. You would be supprised how much tresspassing goes down when that green Expedition is parked on your property.

Call the sheriff and infrom him of the officers actions especially if he is up for re-election. I bet it gets taken care of.

Call your local CO. I have had better sucess with CO when it comes to trespassers. A buddy of mine owns land in Lawrence County and the CO were always available to check out folks and let them know that the landowner was not happy about them trespassing.

If you have the tresspassers on video, then it's pretty dang cut and dried I would think. Carry a video camera.

I made an interesting discovery this past Saturday in one of my woods... found a tree with 5 screw-in steps and scrapes on the bark of the tree showing it had been used recently...
I'm going out Wednesday afternoon to move a stand to a new position and plan to take a hacksaw to "improve" my "visitor's" step #4's performance... :-)
Just kidding... I'll pull'em

It's just deer hunting and it's not worth risking injury or death over. Take the pegs and leave a note, he wont be back.
