Squirrelhunter, I have never been squirrel hunting, but want to. I have a question. I have a small wooded area to hunt deer. Will being in the woods shooting squirrel disturb my chances of getting a deer? How long should I stay out of the woods before deer season starts?

I know that Im sure looking forward to it,squirrel is about the only thing I hunt anymore. I have a 14 year old grandson that is starting to hunt with me this is his third year and he is doing great.Being out with him is what its all about for me.

Jon, if I were you, Id try and stay out of the small patch of deer woods for at least 3 weeks or so before deer season opens. You could probably find some public land to squirrel hunt that won't be too crowded in August/September. Others might disagree, but as deer season approaches, I get pretty careful about stinking up my properties.

I truly want to hunt it all, but sure don't want to hurt my chances with the deer. I've also been concerned with this patch of woods ...concerned about any deer being down in this area. I've been to scout it twice. The first time, I saw no tracks period, not one, but it hadn't rained in a while. I did see trails though, but nothing impressive to me. Oh, I also put out a camera and put down some feed. My flash didn't work, so I got nothing, but the food had not been disturbed at all after one week. So the second trip I found a few tracks, and put out some food. Today, I will take my new camera and check the food. I know that they are in the area, but they may not like this bottom; I just don't know. I usually have to learn things the hard way. This time, I'm trying to read the manual from you guys first. Thanks again!

I agree with metamora about the time,I usually quit squirrel hunting about a month before I start deer hunting. As for shooting messing things up,I've shot squirrels with deer in sight and they don't even seem to pay attention to it,but it might be because it's just a crack of a .22 instead of a big boom from a shotgun.

The gun noise is nothing to be concerned about. I've rarely seen deer even raise their heads in concern at the sound of gunfire (unless it was very close)...it is something they hear all the time. What you need to be concerned about is advertising your presence in the woods with your scent. Once hunting season gets rolling, it is hard to avoid, but I like to give my hunting areas a good break from my odor in the weeks leading up to October 1st. This will help insure that when you first take to the deer stand, you will have done all you can to keep the deer you are hunting on their normal summer travel pattern. Once season has gotten off to a good start, the deer will know they are being hunted, but so will the deer on all the neighboring properties so all bets will be off then anyways.

Yes, this sounds like sound advice. I will try to hunt the edge in this bottom area, and stay out of the rest of it. I have one more place to set up my camera, and then I'll be ready. The other small property is relatively narrow and shouldn't involve much scouting. They probably past through this area. It doesn't seem quite as dense from satellite. I've seen big deer in the fields in this county. I may take a doe from one and a buck from the other, but I may not see any at all. :-) It's just so nice to have a place to go.

No,you can only carry guns that are legal for deer, unless it's a CCW.But I wouldn't recommend doing any shooting while deer hunting except at deer anyway, you don't want to draw attention to yourself or spook deer just out of sight. You need to be as quiet as possible.

Love being out in the woods, and tree chicken season provides the perfect reason to be out. However, i was wondering about other's past success rate during the earlier part of the season. I went out last year during "early season" and from what i remember, everything was still so thick that just spotting one was challenging enough let alone being able to put a bead on it. BUT still i go, again.

To me, the real secret to early season success is knowing what trees the squirrels are hitting for nuts. The better you know a particular woods, the easier it is. Listen for cuttings dropping, squirrels barking, and limbs swishing. Then attempt to hone in on the critter. My absolute favorite time of the entire season is mid Sept. to late Oct.

I'm not that fancy, just a Remmington 572.
Are we picking teams this year? I need to redeem myself for a bad year last season.
