Snakey osage and rat snake bow

I started on this bow last summer and then put it away while I worked on other stuff. Here recently I got it out and finished it up. Its 61" long and the limbs are 1.5" wide. Its 45# @ 24". The limbs twist back and forth a little and have some concave areas. It has a kink right in the handle and the limbs curve to the sides which makes it pretty much center shot. Its a fun bow to shoot. It is backed with a single black rat snake skin (roadkill) and finished off with 6 coats of tung oil. The tip overlays are horn. It has a dark wind check in the lower fade.

















When I shaped the grip area I followed the shape of the back where it dips down.













Full draw shot. Don't pay attention to my outfit. I dress for comfort, not style.

Here is another one I recently finished. It started as a thin belly split that I popped off the bottom of a stave from the big tree I cut in 2011. Its 52" long and ended up being 45 lbs @ 24". The limbs are 1 3/8" wide. The backing is cotton fabric with a snake skin pattern. The tip overlays are from old persimmon golf club heads. The string is 10 strands of FF/D97 with some extra strands in the loops. I finished the bow with 6 coats of tung oil.

Both are working, works of art but that snakey bow. That grew to perfection for such.

Amazing bows, excellent work. Any deer taken with either would be one remaining my one's memory for a lifetime.
