What is good way to distinguish between walnut and butternut for us non tree huggers? Physical traits are mixed between black walnut and butternut. It is a small tree.

Duff-that's a good question that even I had to look up...I just haven't seen enough butternuts lately to even think about trying to remember the difference! Try this link: www.rrca.on.ca/view.php?id=108Hopefully that works for you. If you have a young tree then going by the pith color (fig 4 in the link) may be the easiest way to tell. Let me know if this helps. Good luck!!

black walnut chocolote Bark when broken on older trees Yea, this one was couple years old and had just enough odd traits that had me second guessing. Now need to determine if others are a sumac or tree of heaven.
