Just wondering is any of you folks have yet to heard locusts "buzzing" in the trees?? I normally hear them start in late June but this year I haven't heard a single one. STRANGE!

Heard one just yesterday here in Indy. Was out for a morning walk and something chased it out of tree as I was passing by.
It occurred to me at the time that I hadn't heard them yet.

Not up in Indiana either? This is very strange to me as I've never seen a year where they were absent. When my Brother and I moved here in Ky, in 2008, they were having a 17 year Locust infestation going on in this area of Kentucky. But every year, since living here regular Locusts were always out and "buzzing" about, and very noisy at night. ~NOTHING this year~

Of course, they have to buzz pretty loudly to be heard above the constant ringing in my ears!
Note to all young'uns, USE HEARING PROTECTION!

? My cousin and his son recently came out to my place to shoot. I made them double-up hearing protection (plugs and muffs) and wear eye protection. He started to question me at first and I flat told him - when your hearing is gone, there is no getting it back ... which he quickly agreed with and didn't question me again.

So, I am still wondering if anyone, besides me, have not heard any locust "buzzing" this Summer. This is starting to become "spooky", and I have a few theories, which I won't entertain here. Maybe they'll appear later in mid July or August; but it sure is strange though they aren't out at this particular date and time, as normal. These insects might be annoying at times, but they do provide protein, for several species of wildlife such as Turkeys & Squirrels.

Wife and I fished about six hours yesterday on a little lake in a very rural, quiet wooded area. Saw and heard a family of geese and a heron, heard various birds and a few squirrels and some unexplained critters walking about in the surrounding woods, but no other humans or noises from civilization......and no locusts.
Usually we have some show up in the yard every year as I mow and trim, even on the "off years", but I have seen none yet this year there, either. Hadn't really thought about it.
I would assume their tardiness is associated with the cold winter and late spring warmth that seems to have altered the timing of many other natural occurrences this year.
The bluegills did seem to all be particularly close to the bank and mostly beneath overhanging limbs, but they're normally there to some extent. Hard to judge whether that had any relationship to the locusts this year.

Was out doing some lawn work, this morning, and still no Cicadas, maybe later they will show-up but I've never, in my 64 years, have any fail to show-up each Summer. We had them last Summer, which makes even harder to figure as to why there is none yet this Summer.

I don't normally hear cicadas here until very late July or early August. Not surprised to have not heard any just yet.

I'm not hearing them either. Wonder if the winter has taken a toll on them as well. The place we buy suet from says the stuff is flying off the shelf like they never seen so the woodpeckers are finding the bugs to be scarce as well it seems. We definitely are seeing a larger quantity of birds at the feeders than normal for this time of year.

We definitely are seeing a larger quantity of birds at the feeders than normal for this time of year. We also had an early freeze down here in Central Kentucky last October; but I've seen this before, and the following Summer months ALWAYS had Cicadas "buzzing" night & day. Just returned from Krogers and even asked the check-out Gal if she noticed the lack of Cicadas this Summer. Her reaction was just as you Folks have been, saying that she noticed, on her evening walks, it seemed strangely quiet. As for Bird species, many do infact rely on these insects for Summer food. ..........AGAIN, VERY STRANGE........!!!

I'm somewhat ashamed to admit this, but as a lad I hunted cicadas with a BB gun. You would have been hard pressed to find a child more proud of his trophies than I was. It has been a few decades since I have taken up arms against them, though, so I have no daily bags with which to draw reference. I have not noticed any at all yet in my neck of the woods. Interesting.
