Well, it seemed that it would crank up good this morning but they didn't really start moving until around noon in our woods. My buddy's grandson insisted I try out his Mossberg 410. It did a fine job on 2 more rats for Team 2!

Did the math. We are at 388 squirrels for the season. Suppose we can get 12 more between now and next Sat. at sunset? It'd be cool to hit 400 for the season! maddog Well, we're gonna come real close. Its been interesting the last few weeks. It seems like the squirrels dont really get at it til noon or so. It's almost like they are waiting til the morning frost or freeze is over and it warms above freezing!

For not being much of a squirrel hunter, I have had a heck of a good time this year. Seen more than ever before. Jay

Mark me down for 1 last Friday and 3 more on Saturday. I have an action shot from the hunt on Friday. We made lots of trees, but very few were not on den trees and the little buggers went to hole before we could get there. No slick trees, every tree that we could not find a squirrel had one or more holes in it. One gray even peeked back out once to see what the ruckus was about.

I put myself to the challenge today, deciding to carry my Ruger LCRx, a lil snubbie with my custom handloads...for squirrels! First gray squirrel at ~10 yards...Missed! Looked like the shot was just over his head: The woods was alive with em today. Second shot...BAM! Missed another one! And then, as I was tucked between a shagbark hickory and a few birch saplings, I saw another gray scamper down an old oak tree about 30 yards from me and it scurried in my direction...20 yards...10 yards...Kapowee!!! At about 7 yards I popped this dude right behind his ear! One more for Team 2!

Add one more to squirrel team 6 I liked to never found him. He was inside that rusted out metal bucket. I pulled it over to expose him, doa bumped into the young guy that hunts next door, he was out for squirrels too.

It's been a wild kind of day. Finished up a bird hunt and then let the pups run the woods for a bit. Pretty much by accident, Duke tree'd this gray squirrel as I was carrying the Remington New Model Army, known as the 1858 black powder revolver. I'm borrowing it from an old timer just to learn a bit about the black powder revolver (more of that discussion is in the Campfire section). So, at about 10 yards, I dropped the bushytail! Pretty cool stuff...taking my last squirrel of the season with a percussion revolver!

5 More! Since it was the last day my uncle and I let the dog get all the exercise we could. Followed her around for four hours and left when we both had our limit. Great end to the season and 10 tails to add to what is already in the freezer to donate next year.

Well, since the season is over, and it's been snowing since last night, I decided to try and make my first squirrel pot pie. It came out awesome! Me and ole Dex[my mini pins] both thought it was great! maddog
