I'm kinda of an a$$ sometimes. So, when the need to make someone see how ill informed they are hits, I usually excitedly voice real world scenarios of their favorite politician and get them to tell me how stupid they sound.

I used to simply let comments from others slide at family and social events rather than represent my viewpoints.
That got harder to do as I grew older and crustier.
Now that I'm a full fledged old curmudgeon, I tend to avoid the frustration of keeping my opinions bottled up.
I do try to wait for the opportunity to inject a comment that presents another viewpoint without being unnecessarily hurtful towards the idiot with the opposing view, if possible, especially at family events. Tact can be your friend in advancing your opinion without stiffening the opposition and appearing "mean" to the bystanders who haven't yet taken sides in the discussion. Ya catch more of 'em with honey than with vinegar.
Not necessary to throw in a shrapnel grenade when a little firecracker will get their attention and notify them of an opposing viewpoint and someone willing to defend it. Sometimes that approach invites them to argue, sometimes it simply suggests that "this isn't the time or place, but here's your opposition when you're ready".

There is no point debating with someone that fanatical... in most cases they are trying to bait you.
I have a couple of people with whom I disagree that I can spar genially with, but they are a rare breed.
