I love it when a plan comes together! Until you make the last out in the bottom of the 9th, down 1, with the bases loaded.
5 minutes till 7, wind laid down, single doe came in from the west, stood broadside at 18 yards. ...... turns out she was 15 yards and I can cut a 1" diameter tree in half.
No blood, no hair, she ran 10 yards and just looked dumbfounded.
Archery hunting with a crossbow is still archery hunting.

They stop muzzleloader bullets too; I feel your pain.

Honestly, probably better I hit the tree. With my distance mistake and the angle, I would have hit her in the top of the back. Maybe spine, maybe just sliced a chunk of back strap.
She spun and covered 10 to 15 yards in about .02 seconds, but slowly walked off into the cow pasture after about 3 minutes. She'll be back. I watched her pick up an acorn out of one of my boot prints and chew before the shot. Her belly will over ride her brains.

This evening I broke down and hunted over a cornfield for the first time in 20 seasons of deer hunting -- I'm just not a crop field sitter. I set up on a narrow wooded strip that bisects a cornfield and connects to the main woods. At 6:30 PM, a buck showed up exactly the way I imagined a perfect hunt going in that spot. The only problem was he was a 2 1/2 year old buck with a heavy 6-point rack. He stopped in a clear spot at the entrance of the strip, made a scrape at 18 yards, then strolled on down the finger never knowing I was there.
Tomorrow morning it looks to be a north wind here, which is perfect for a new spot that I gained this year but haven't hunted yet. I've been saving it back until closer to the rut so as not to mess it up. The properties surrounding this 70 wooded acres hold big bucks, so I'm sure that this one does too. Two guys gun hunt it, so I have to be out by then. That means tomorrow and two additional weekends to get it done, and that's if I have a northerly wind. After I figure out the deer movements, I may be able to use additional wind directions, but to play it safe for the first hunt I need a north wind. It sure would be nice to whack a bruiser in there before the gun hunters. LOL!

I saw the first deer that I didn't shoot tonight. Two does and one buck. Didn't take a shot ...well, I did shoot another squirrel. The buck was a little smaller than what I got last year, so I'll wait.
He was chasing the girls.
It was really fun being back out in the woods. I hadn't been out in two months. This was my first day out; I think I'll do it tomorrow too.

Had 2 bucks sparring 60 yards away in cedars. When they started to walk off, I grunted and they spooked. I could only see their bodies as they walked. Could not see how big they were. They sparred for quite a while. I'm on My place in Dearborn County. Not sure why they spooked. I'm directly downwind. Must not have liked my grunt.

NNW wind isn't ideal but I'm at a spot where that won't hurt me. (Back to Brown Co) Some sign and 1 doe sighted so far this year at this spot. With the wind supposedly shifting for tonight should be able to hit a spot I really want.

Saw stuck walking away from me across holler about 70 or 80 yards away. Grunted a couple times and he stopped, turned on a dime and came on s string right to a 20 yard shooting lane! Just wish he was bigger! Still very cool! Awesome morning! Bucks are getting rutty!!!

Yep I would say it is on! Just had a doe blow through here 15 yds away chased by a mature buck. He was 3.5 year old anyways . Tried merping him he barely reacted
He must have circled, came in down wind of me and blew. Oh well

Great morning, early. The last hour has been dead. I've seen 4 deer, all bucks. First two were fighting. Didn't get a detailed look at them since it was still pretty dark and they were in cedars. Grunted to them and they spooked...not sure why. Then ended up grunting at a young 6 pointer and had him come straight to me. A little later I had a nice young 9 pointer cruise in and spent 5 minutes in range. There are several brand new scrapes around. The young bucks are really active. The older ones won't be far behind. The rut's coming in right on schedule!

Other than squirrels this morning, nothing. Looking at the scrapes on the place shows very little if no activity. That's really unusual, as it's an 80 acre wooded parcel that has very little to no activity on it, bordered by another 40 ac woods to the SW and 80 ac woods to the N that also see 0 activity. Farm fields are on the other sides. I usually see at least a dozen deer if not more using the property. The large flock of hens and poults, and the bachelor flock of gobblers are gone too. Very unusual. I pulled the card from the trail cam. One picture of a 4 point buck on it in 2 days, at 8:45 p.m., 10-24. Today I think I found out why I'm not seeing the deer that I normally see on the property. A doe came by with her tongue about dragging on the ground about 80 yds away. I thought a buck was chasing her, but no, two German Shepards were running her..... The 3 houses that are close (1/4 mile or so away) don't have dogs, so I have no idea where they came from. Too far to see if they had collars. The next nearest homes are a mile plus away. I have permission from the landowner to shoot coyotes on sight, so I might have to drag the .223 and a predator call along with me now.

Shotgun sighted in since its nice and warm out today. Sighted in muzzleloader several weeks ago. Got my hunting clothes washed up and ready for the end of the week cold front coming in.
Went out this morning for awhile, temp was 40 degrees, lower than what the local weather man said. It was 65 degrees at 1130pm when I went to bed. Saw one button and doe very early, then a big coyote came though could get him to stop. Out of the woods by 930am.
I got 20 acres in corn still standing, beans still up next door, acorns all over the ground and still dropping. The deer should be fat.

Didn't hunt this morning but got a new stand hung and had a pretty fun time considering all the work. The work consisted of unloading a 10ft Jon and over loading it with a new 2 man ladder stand, saws, all the goodies to hang it, cameras, water jug, etc etc and then dragging it all 200yds to the nearest water. Then paddling all this and my 23olbs another 3-400yds to the furthest part of this pit then somehow getting it all up the biggest, nastiest spoil bank you've ever seen. From there it wasn't too bad, another 80yds to the tree and getting it all setup. Never been so excited to hunt a new stand. Next weekend Becca and I will be up in it with the crossbow and hopefully she can take one of the bucks that has the area tore up. Only negative to the day was after I was done and went to hang a camera I realized I'd forgotten the SD card in the truck. For all that could have gone wrong today, I'm perfectly fine with only forgetting a card.

Well back in the stand. I'm trying to remain positive about seeing deer. But only seeing one in the past week has me kinda down. That's why they call it hunting not shooting deer in a barrel

Hunting about 50 yards into the timber along a cornfield that was combined yesterday. It is hot actually too hot but I need meat for jerky! Not expecting to see deer until last light...
