How will hunting be this year for these species? We asked farmland biologist Budd Veverka to make a prediction.
“Although this summer has been excellent for producing young, this past winter was particularly hard on the game bird populations," Veverka said. "Pheasant harvest may be poor, quail harvest should be fair, and rabbit harvest should be great.”
Season dates and bag limits: Pheasant: Nov. 1 - Dec. 15. Daily bag limit: 2 male pheasants Quail north: Nov. 1 – Dec. 15 (north of Interstate 74). Daily bag limit: 4 per day. Quail south: Nov. 1 – Jan. 10, 2015 (south of Interstate 74). Daily bag limit: 8 per day. Rabbit: Nov. 1 – Feb. 28, 2015. Daily bag limit: 5

Haven't seen more than 2-3 pheasants, and half dozen quail, in the last 2 yrs., where I live/hunt. More rabbits in my little town, than I've seen out in the country.

There haven't been any pheasants around here since the 70s and have only seen a couple groups of quail since the Blizzard of 78.

Been kicking up quite a few large coveys of quail when out rabbit hunting. Had a covey of about 10 Sunday, Wednesday kicked up one with 20 or so in it and another with about 30. Friday we kicked one up with maybe 15-20 in it. Rabbits galore this year. Never shot. Not sure the season was in and really don't like killing them anyway. Takes too many to make a meal and without a bird dog its hard to get enough up to ensure a chance to get enough of them.
We are running more and bigger rabbits on all the properties we hunt. I've never killed bigger rabbits than the ones we are killing this year. I'm convinced it has to be a different rabbit then the ones we used to run up north.
