I have fired 5 or 6 saboted slugs thru my 870 in the last 2 or 3 weeks. I have yet to clean it since. Do I need to clean it before the weekend or is it fine to wait a bit?
How often do you clean your slug gun...after ever firing? I used to, but have been told its not necessary.

Can you see any plastic buildup in the barrel or choke? If not I'd say you're good. I use the bore snake on my shotguns routinely after a days shooting.

I never clean a gun between checking for accuracy and hunting. In other words, I'll clean after the season and maybe again before pre-season sighting in, but not after I am comfortable with the accuracy for the upcoming season.

My father-in-law suggests only using a bore snake after sighting. Then a thorough cleaning at season's end. He's been shooting and cleaning guns far longer than me so I trust his judgement. And he's never given me any reason to second guess.

A clean cold barrel will usually shoot to a different POI (point of impact) than a dirty barrel. Also, a cold barrel usually shoots to a different POI than a warm barrel. Different enough to make you miss a deer? That might depend on the yardage, but usually no. Once I verify POI before season, I don't clean it. If you shoot your gun enough, and it is accurate, you will know how many rounds you can shoot before the accuracy starts to go away. With less than 10 down the tube, I wouldn't worry about it at all.

Slug gun should be fine. Muzzleloaders should be cleaned. I hear that even BH209 is corrosive to some degree. I clean at the range to make sure mine hits where its aiming on a clean barrel. Subsequent shot is close enough not to matter for any needed follow-ups. But if I have a miss, it gets discharged after the hunt and cleaned for the next day.

Since I shot my ML yesterday to verify POI, I won't clean it until after ML season is done. Same with the .243, that will get cleaned after Wi. deer season is over.

I know a guy that never cleans his muzzle loader. A CVA inline. He will leave it loaded hanging out in his barn year round, he gets his buck every year. Never has had a misfire,,,,,,,,,yet. I would hate to think what the inside of the barrel looks like. I even offered to clean it for him, but won't let me. It will get him one of these days and his luck will run out. I enjoy cleaning all my weapons and do it regular whether they need it or not. I love the smell of Hoppe's
