Where I hunt in Jefferson Co., the number of Amish has increased dramatically over the last 20 years. As the old timers would say, "they breed like brush rabbits". Next to the farm where I go, one of the brood built a home on a couple of acres of the home place when he got married. Started a wood working business, the brood has now put up some green houses, and their corn crop lacks to feed the horses. This young man has been married 6 years now and has 6 children, and is always asking to deer hunt the hillside woods on the property on the farm where I stay because he has no meat to feed the kids. The leader of the community called me [cell phone] a few weeks back wondering why he had not seen me recently, as I had not been by to drop off some deer [bad season, hardly any deer seen, zero for the season], between EHD and a kid a year it does make my mind wonder if they aren't hunting year round.

I have no proof of this of course, but i have been told that they DO hunt year round and DON'T pay attention to bag limits.

Greetings But I thought there were laws and limits to stop them taking more than there share. I could understand it in the Times way back that they are trying to replicate, but someone needs to try telling them, no stop, go to the supermarket like every one else has to. I am far from racist etc but I do get annoyed over here when laws and rules are changed for a different culture, For example we have to wear a motorcycle helmet but a man with a turban doesn't, eh? Why?. Tell him to take the towel of his head?? Lol. And while at it learn them about contraception, sorry woody but it's true, lol. Oh man some folks these Amish, lol. Regards Billy. Amish are really no different than any other group of people. Some are great law abiding people some are not. They are an easy target for any thing that is wrong. The do believe in large familys. It is not unusual for them to have 9 to 12 children. They most often have a garden and raise their own meat. As with any large group if they all hunt and take a legal no of deer it does not take to long to deplete a herd in that aera. Most do not look at deer hunting as a sport it is putting meat on the table so if it is legal it is shot. Thus the displeasure for the neighbor that wants to kill BIG bucks or wants to see lots of deer every time they are out. There are plenty of "white folks" that do the same and do some illeagle hunting activity but they look the same as every one else and it is easy to blame the amish. I am not saying amish(as a group) are good or bad. They live a different life than "normal" people here and have the same make up as a group of English, Canadians, prodistants, catholics and sush. Hope this helps u understand some of the amish ways and why the take such a hit here Oh and the dnr dos not make any special rules to let them get around the bag limits or hunting seasons. They have to follow all rules just like i do or risk arrest or ticket
