I think I would consult an attorney BEFORE I said anything more about this on an internet forum. The laws in Mo and Il are probably quite different than Indiana. BTW I bet you can kiss that rifle good by. Oh yea you may want to declare the value of that rifle on your taxes as barter income. Police departments often issue press releases on their activities to the general public. Often some departments give arrest and calls responded to to the media, you might check papers and television reports from the area he was busted in.

featherduster....it is the same gun - police told me serial# and it matched what I had. That was my original reason to call them to ask about getting my rifle. I had assumed that it was the .380 he owned that was the stolen weapon mentioned. had no idea it was mine...never had this occur before so it's all new to me. Funny part is that it was stolen in northern Indiana and made it's way to St. Louis and into the hands of a Hoosier.
And the fact that I know the immediate history of the gun is all I stated - I got it from a guy who got it from his son who bought it at a gun shop. BUT...since ML rifles ARE NOT firearms...I don't see where anyone, even the shop owner would do any paperwork on it and find it was stolen. I'm just stating the facts at hand...the son of my guy is a pastor as well as a 3 middle east tour marine veteran and that the shop is owned by what I consider to be a stand-up guy. But I could be wrong there...good thing they were able to find the sales receipt for the purchase of the rifle!!
And if you think I have made statements in poor judgement please feel free to say so. It takes a great deal to insult or upset me and I do not take it personal in any way. I expect to take some heat when I say I do not trust any of the local constabulary in any way. If you wish...do so in private...no skin off my nose...open book here.

Like I said before ...odd that the officer I spoke to had no idea the rifle was not his.. Also...I have no legal worries since I can show who and where it came from. No nefarious dealings on my part. I am not concerned with losing the rifle since in all actuality I have maybe $5 in it. And just so y'all know...in Illinois...if you don't have a FOID card...the guys at the gun shops won't even let you touch a gun without that card being on the counter while you handle it. Apparently that's the law...or at least their interpretation. Went into a shop to look at a shotgun a guy told me about. Dealer tells me I have to place my FOID card on the counter before he will get the shotgun. I inform him I am an Indiana resident and that even Illinois law allows me to purchase a long gun there and he says they don't care they just don't want any issues with the police so they only sell to Illinois residents with a FOID card. Even the gun shop owners go far above and beyond the laws just to avoid being hassled by police....they are that scared of being jailed or put out of business by the government. The funny part is that they basically ignore the law and subject themselves and their potential customers to even stricter controls than those imposed upon them out of fear. I said I can legally buy the gun and have it shipped to a dealer in Indiana and do the paperwork there through him...they didn't care...they wouldn't let me touch a gun. Wouldn't even sell me a box of 22 shells without that card. A sad testament to the future of this country where the people dealing in a legitimate business are in fear for their livelihood for fear of the government intrusion and a loss of freedom. Closer than I can imagine to a totalitarian state over there...sad...truly sad.

I know of several folks that bought handguns from an il gun shop and had them shipped to Indiana. Seems the one you visited was more of a good ol boys shop.
Not sure why anyone would spend $ in IL to begin with!

Oh no...that is every gun shop in Illinois I have been to....like 6 of them...all the same response to me. It's like being tossed into Russia in the 50's-60's or Germany in the 30's when the government had informants everywhere and everyone was afraid of the government. I try to stay out of Illinois as much as possible these days.

Hmmmm....41 days and not a peep out of the police in Illinois. I guess they don't really care where the rifle came from since they have it and the guy in possession of it.
I did ask a friend for some legal advice and he said I have no worries since I can prove where I got it and that it went through the hands of a dealer before I got it...and the bonus...I am not the one who crossed state lines with it so Illinois can't really say boo to me except to ask where I got it and try to track down it's origin.

I would not push it maybe they aren't pursuing you or talking to you for a reason like they don't want to rope you into the rodeo along with him

Yeah...but I am not one to let my troubles be placed upon the shoulders of others. It's mine...period. Whatever they choose to do is what they choose to do. I just know it's a non winner for them if they wish to prosecute since I have solid alibi of the origin of the rifle before I got it....so....I figure they done got one mouse in their trap and they are content with that. That's why they haven't contacted me. So....we wait.....
