Kyle and I just got home from another amazing weekend with the Freedom Hunt Southern Swing for kids with special needs. I think out of 20 youth hunters, 9 were able to connect and take a gobbler this weekend. Despite some heroic efforts by the guides, we weren't able to get a gobbler for my son Kyle, but it didn't matter. We had an amazing time as we always do, so to come home without a bird is really no big deal.
I can't post without a HUGE thanks to a young man named Hunter Wallis. We met Hunter last season in camp and he returned again this year to help out with the calling duties for the kids. My son and I were fortunate enough to enjoy Hunter's calling all morning today. Hunter sat outside our blind in pouring rain, without any rain gear, for almost 5 hours as we tried and tried to pull a long-beard that was standing in a field about 125 yards away. Hunter isn't just another turkey hunter... at 17 years young he holds numerous state and national turkey calling titles, including the U.S. Open Calling Championship in which he beat out callers from all ages including the best adults in the country. If you want to hear amazing calling, search Youtube for Hunter Wallis and you'll find plenty of great videos of his hunts and calling. His efforts today were incredible and yet, sometimes you just can't speak logic to an animal that has a brain the size of a pea.
Regardless, we had a great time with our guides, the camp staff, and all the volunteers that make Freedom Hunt so incredibly special. Can't wait till next April to do it one final time with Kyle as a youth hunter.

It is a testimony to the inherent goodness of those who hunt. Thank you for sharing this experience.
