Hey, if she wants to come, the more the merrier. Hope she can handle some "ribald" humor around the campfire at night. Remember, it's "primitive", one outhouse, some of the boys may have to go outside, etc. maddog

Put my Savage .204 or her Weatherby .17 HMR in her hands and it is lights out. Or her Cooper .223 or her Savage .223 and on and on......... At 100 yards, she is truly disappointed if she has more than one ragged hole on the target. Same at 215 yards (max distance on our range). Then on top of that, she catches more fish than me AND won our 8 team Fantasy Football league last season. I am a lucky guy.

Just kidding. Sounds like you have a keeper. Mine likes to shoot once in a great while, has no interest in hunting (does like to eat venison, not squirrel), but does she ever love to fish. Plus she comes from a family of hunters so she is good with as her mother calls it, "hunters divorce" come fall. Also glad she is all for our son enjoying shooting and hunting (4). So no complaints! Jay, I read you loud and clear! The woman is a shooter. I keep trying to convince her that I taught her all she knows. Yeah, right! We eat a lot of venison, but, like your wife, no squirrel for her. She is a fishing machine: catch, clean, cook. Me, eat what she caught. Good for you with your son. I am working with my 15 year old grandson to get ready for deer and turkey seasons. He is very excited. Me too!

I was in that neighborhood yesterday afternoon and drove to the campground to see what the lake looked like again, and maybe try for a fish or two before dark.
Didn't get around to fishing, but did walk around the lake and found it to be about a third covered with cattails.
Saw some evidence that others had fished there, but nothing to indicate their success.
There doesn't seem to be any launch ramp, and no way to back a vehicle to the water's edge. I'd say to expect to carry or drag any boat you hope to use about fifty yards or so to get it in the water. Several spots for bank fishing available, but much of the water would be almost impossible to fish without being in a small boat. It might surprise me, but I suspect we should put more faith in squirrel meat and hot dogs than locally caught fish 8^)
Plenty remote. Could hear no highway noise or neighborhood dogs, or anything other than the woods and an occasional plane far away.
I also wanted to check the access since we'd had a good bit of rain. It confirmed what I remembered from going down there long ago. The shallow creek crossings on the most direct access road are still shallow and clear and should present no problem for even a very civilized small car, even after a rain. I used to go there even in wet weather with a Chevette with no problem at all. The area is surrounded by deep woods and there is no runoff from fields. Those small creeks are pretty much spring fed and hardly ever get deeper or muddy.

Russ, I figure the fishing is a bonus. It's mostly about the squirrel hunting, anyway.

maddog, yep, I figured that was the case. Just wanted anyone who was thinking about the prospect of pulling their bass boat down there should be advised that it wouldn't be a good opportunity to expect the fishing to be more than an aside to the main thrust of the gathering.
I had even thought about pulling my 14 ft. v-bottom to it, but this visit convinced me that the canoe would be a better choice, if I bring any boat. It would be an easy grassy drag of 40 or 50 yards to launch the canoe from where I could park the Jeep, and it would be more than enough boat for the pond there.

So I know I'm bringing my go to gun for this, my Savage .17 HMR. my current dilemma is what to bring as a backup? My sentimental backup is a H&R Topper .410, I'm just not sure how much harassment I want to deal with if I start using a shotgun. :-)

We will be harassed together then. I like a shotgun early season and rifle later on.

pending on the foliage and everybody's shootin' abilities, best bring the shotguns, so we can have some limb chickens to eat on Sat. night. maddog

I work that weekend of the 19, 20 , I would have to see if I can get vacation time .
I just google mapped the location and it's a 3.13 hour drive for me . I'm already off work that Friday morning at 7:30 am . I might rent a car if mine isn't fixed ( it runs but a few problems ).

I have a QUESTION : Is Dove hunting permitted since the hunt would be in Sept. , This way I could bring the right shells ( steel and so on ) plus decoys , for Doves , instead of going there and then its brought up

Well, you can bring the stuff, but I don't know where you'd hunt. It's nothing but thick woods, as soon as you walk out of camp. Plus, there is no shooting within 400 ft. of camp. I personally don't think you'd see a dove.

Thank you maddog , I've gone on hunts where I wasn't told we would be hunting other game and I didn't have the proper gear so I ended up sitting out on the rest of the hunt .
