I just read something on another hunting forum that disturbed me a bit. I read that it's not Legal to carry a pistol on some Federally Owned Lakes that the Corp of Engineers built and that IN leases from the Corp of Engineers. But I thought that if you went though the paper work and paid your fees that one could carry a pistol for self defense as long as you have the legal permit with you. Is it true that we can't conceal carry on Mississinewa Reservoir.
And if this is illegal on Mississinewa Reservoir then what about Patoka Reservoir? There are too many restrictions on the right to bear arms IMHO. We should restrict illegal activities not guns.

www.handgunlaw.us/states/indiana.pdfI did a quick search on Google and found this. I guess it's true that we can't carry on Federally Owned Reservoirs in IN? Which means I can't carry my gun at Patoka Lake? That's where I probably need it more than most other places.

As the woman at Muscatatuk NWR explained to me back in the 90's, when you drive through those gates you are no longer technically in Indiana.
Now, not that I'm in favor of a Federal handgun permit because of the nuts jobs Federal law makers, but I believe one would eliminate this little issue.
They way I see it, if nobody knows you have it unless it is necessary to protect yourself, then a judge will surely overlook the incident instead of suggest that your death be a better option.

Guess Hovey Lake, too, since it is federal property maintained by DNR through a lease agreement.

I was thinking Monroe was also. I called them 2 years ago, and I thought they told me that I couldn't even have it in my car, but I can't remember what I had for breakfast.

Wow- I guess I have been breaking the law regularly. I spend a lot of time around Monroe and the Dean and always carry.

Deam, not Dean. I hate auto-correct.

Wow- I guess I have been breaking the law regularly. I spend a lot of time around Monroe and the Dean and always carry. Join the club. There wasn't one single camp out our troop went on that multiple leaders weren't armed. Against property rules. Against Boy/Girl Scout rules. Made sure nothing was going to keep every child from coming home. The kids never knew.

So let me get this right? There is NO concealed carry in the Hoosier National. Ooooooooops always carry when we ride horses there.

So let me get this right? There is NO concealed carry in the Hoosier National. Ooooooooops always carry when we ride horses there. The way I understand it is that it's only the part controlled by the corp of Army Engineers, which mostly control the waterways, bridges, dams and such. So, Monroe forest is okay, but not the lake and area around it.

I was told that Federal Wildlife Refuges are not state property and state LTCH was not recognized. I do not know if that is true for all Federal property or not.

So I'm in the right or in the wrong when I'm carrying on horse back? Or when we camp at the horse camp?

The problem is when it is a Corp of Engineers property.

So I'm in the right or in the wrong when I'm carrying on horse back? Or when we camp at the horse camp? When in doubt, call the property manager; they'll know for sure.

Guess Hovey Lake, too, since it is federal property maintained by DNR through a lease agreement. Hovey Lake is similar to Bluegrass and Bluegrass is an Indiana Fish and Wildlife Area purchased by the State IDNR for hunters and fishermen.
Patoka Lake is definitely a Corp's Project but I'm not so sure about Hovey.
Today I was watching C Span for a while and they had some mid level Federal Court hearing arguments about the California Gun Carrying laws being too restrictive. I hope that the courts rule in favor of the 2nd amendment and rule all these laws unconstitutional and restore our rights to bear arms. The US Constitution should trump all these other various laws and rules and regulations. If they want to ban guns and arms then let them try to change the US Constitution. I thought this for a long time. And I never owned any handguns until recently. It cost me a lot of money to get though all the legal hurdles and I think it's more about money than anything else.

Man this is getting more complicated than I had hoped. I like to try and simply things as much as possible but when dealing with the Federal Government, State Government and Local Governments that's hard to do.
1) What about the Hoosier National Forest?
2) What about the Patoka National Wildlife Refuge?
I've stopped by and talked to the manager of the PNWR in the past and signed up for a year to be able to hunt coyotes on that property. But I didn't think about asking him about carrying a handgun for personal protection while hunting or for hunting purposes.
It's easier for Gays to get married these days than it is for a man to figure out if he can legally carry a hand gun concealed or OWB.

Our second amendment rights should not end at any entrance way of any establishment or property .. Carry one into a Federal Courthouse and let us know how that works out for you. ;-)
