I thought we could do a self paced online class for a fee and it didn't matter his age. My son is 9 years old and can handle his little 20 guage just fine. I got to the site and it said he had to be 12 to take H.E. but is the rule that you can only hunt as an apprentice for 3 years in a lifetime before he has to get his H.E. cert?
This is not very family friendly if this is the case. Hope I am wrong.

We used to not be allowed the apprentice license so I'm thankful for it. I think you can take the classroom style in person before 12 years old

There is no age restriction for in person classes. The online course has an age restriction so the kids can actually do it themselves.
I have been trying to change the law to make it mandatory for kids 12 and up and have to be at least 10 before they take the class. Just change the apprentice rule to 3 per Lifetime after the age of 12 and it all should work itself out.

No doubt he can. Doesn't change my opinion of this rule. I had to take it to hunt in Michigan one year. It is good for people that haven't been around hunting their whole life I guess.

If kids are with an adult why limit it to 3 yrs. Dang gov't telling me I am incapable of teaching my kid the safe and ethical way to hunt. Not my cup of tea. I do appreciate those who volunteer and make it work.

You did just bring up a simpler idea for a change. My next discussion will entail removing the limit on "youth apprentice" licenses.

I was just talking about this with my son. He has one more year on the apprentice license, but I wish he could have a few more before the class was mandatory. I don't feel it is anyone's responsibility but mine to decide when he is actually ready to take the class and be ready to roll. No matter, we will probably take the class next summer or the following because he will have to as that will be his last year of the apprentice license. The it will be time for my daughter to start the apprentice license, so the cycle will start all over for us. I as well do appreciate the ones that commit their own time to do these classes for all that participate.
