I read this article in the Evansville Courier and Press News paper this morning. They are finding that the young deer fawns survive better in the urban environment as opposed to the more rural areas. And the author believes this is due to coyote predation being greater in the county areas. While I agree with his conclusion that coyote kill and eat a lot of deer fawns in the county rural areas I don't think that he understands how high a fence the coyote can jump or climb over. I've seen video of a coyote trapped in the back yard with a wooden fence surrounding the yard. The coyote in the video was able to jump over the fence at the corner by climbing up and over the fence where the two sections interfaced. This told me that coyotes are very cleaver and resourceful and not that afraid to come into urban areas. I've seen them in my mom's yard from time to time and she lives in the suburbs of Evansville, IN. They follow the deer that come from the woods across the busy roadway. The deer run from that woods into the back of my moms house via the yard between my mom's house and her next door neighbor's house. Other people in the neighborhood have also seen this coyote from time to time.
Now I do think that there are less coyotes in the urban city neighborhoods simply because there are more people and big dogs that roam the city or live with the people. But I've read stories about the coyotes snatching kittens and small dogs out of people's yards.
If you want more deer to survive then start shooting coyotes when you are out deer hunting. One coyote will kill many fawns during it's life time.
