That bill is so vague it is hard to have an opinion. There could be a 1 hour rifle season for landowners and satisfy the bill if I am ready it correctly.

It already passed the House 91-0 after that, and is now in the Senate Committee.

That's really what I read into it as well! I imagine if it goes through the DNR Director will just open it up the entire season on private property only. I'm not interested in using some huge HPR for deer around here but my 300 Blk Out would make the perfect deer rifle!

358loader, you seem to be a little behind on what has happened to HB 1231. On February 1 the full House passed the bill with a vote of 91 yea and 0 nay and no amendments. The bill went over to the Senate and was assigned to the Senate Natural Resources Committee. There it is scheduled to be heard by the committee on Monday, February 22 at 9:00 AM in Room 130. Please refer to the following thread (long) for the history of this bill and more information. hunt-indiana.com/thread/55500/rifles-end-playPage 15 on that thread contains the following info, plus lots more: iga.in.gov/legislative/2016/committees/natural_resourcesHB 1231 will be heard by the Senate Natural Resources Committee on Monday, February 22, at 9:00 AM in Room 130.According to the online Senate calendar, in a few weeks we will know whether or not the bill goes to the Governor:Deadline for Senate committee reports on HBs in Senate is February 25. Deadline for 3rd reading of HBs in Senate is March 2. Conference committees begin March 3. Deadline to adjourn 2016 General Assembly Session is March 14.

And any landowner would have the option of simply saying no if they wanted. Just like they can today about any weapon or season or critter.

So the only difference is rifles would not be allowed on public hunting areas? Odd that that little off a change would make that big of a difference. What do u guys think about the 7mm -.08 for deer

So the only difference is rifles would not be allowed on public hunting areas? Odd that that little off a change would make that big of a difference. Support and opposition were about a 50/50 split last year, with most of the opposition citing safety concerns in areas with high hunter densities.

This did pass the Senate committee today by a 5-3 vote. It only applies to the southern 1/2 of the state and rifles can only be used from elevated stands of 10' or more. No walking around with a rifle or shooting from the ground. Strange but what I would expect when the legislature gets involved in wildlife issues.

What vote(s) does it still need? Senate? House?

What vote(s) does it still need? Senate? House? It will have to pass the full Senate, and then back to the house if any changes pass the full Senate.

What vote(s) does it still need? Senate? House? Full Senate (twice) and then back to a conference committee made up of members of both Houses with agreement by the author. The to Gov and AG for approval. Right now the concern is application to canned hunting facilities. Do they have seasons or can HPR be used from Sep 1 until they close in the Spring. Unclear. Also facilities in the north will have different firearms rules than facilities in the south. This is what happens when the legislature gets involved.

My opinion is that those types of places should be subject to the same seasons and weapons restrictions as the rest of the state.
The split state issue isn't unprecedented, considering many states have went that route in the past.

Michigan does it and Kentucky has 5 "zones" I think.

Where is the language posted that says House Bill 1231 only applies to the southern half of the state and these HPRs can only be fired from 10' above the ground?

Michigan does it and Kentucky has 5 "zones" I think. Here in Kentucky we have only "Four Hunting Zones" On public land, several only allow Shotgun slugs or M/L Rifles. Zones #1, #2 have 16 days for rifle season with a limit of two Deer [one buck only] with Zone #1 unlimited Antlerless Harvests. In Zone #2 Hunters may take four Deer (Two Bonus "Antlerless") Zones #3 & #4 have only 10 days during rifle season and only two Deer may be harvested with a rifle. Zone #4 is Bucks only. Bonus Deer must be taken only with archery equipment.
