I have a 2001 Dodge Ram 1500 that I drive mostly during the winter months.. Problem is on damp days it will run rough when first started and then will run great. This morning after a heavy rain it wouldn't start or even fire.. Any ideas ?? All help appreciated..

Possibly you have a cracked ignition coil.

Going on that information, I'd suspect something with the ignition system. How old are the wires and distributor cap? Like others have said, that is what I'd check first. If they have a few years on them, I'd change them all, including the plugs.

Is my guess Buy a new cap and rotor and buy a thing of dielectric grease if you don’t have it already and use it around the seal part of the cap and where the wires connect. Good luck

Good advice above. I'd also grab a can of starting fluid while at the store for plugs, wires, and cap. It's not the real fix, but often will get one running even when it's got a weak spark or poor fuel mixture. I think Autozone and maybe some other parts stores will also read your OBD for free if you're there for parts or supplies.

On all my old Dodges we had to drill a 1/8" hole in the side of the cap to help alleviate any moisture build up.

It might be plugged, not letting the motor vent and that may be why the moisture is getting into the distributor. Let us know what the problem was once you find out!!

Having owned several Dodge trucks and SUV'S I found the best answer for engine problems was a owning a Chevy.
But then if you need a hobby a MOPAR is a good thing to own.

There use to be a white ballast on the firewall not sure if they still had them on your year but had them go out a few times on my truck same symptoms. One other thing under you cap it looks like a star wheel for ignition pickup about like old points had one go out and it ran like crap when it was wet out side

Having owned many dodge trucks and vans for years for work until dodge quit making vans they held up better than fords. The ford vans were JUNK trucks ok, The Chevy vans have been ok but built cheep, I do like my Chevy truck its held up but I like the ride and comfort more in the dodge trucks.

First, thanks for all the help! I let my 2001 Dodge Ram dry out in a very warm garage for nearly 24 hours. Disappointed that it still would not start, I had the distributor cap replaced. Vroom.. It started and is running fine.. It's rusty and doesn't look the greatest, but I just luv driving it ! Thanks-Rom
