Jimstc that gun is beautiful I would not want to take it into the woods for fear of dinging the wood though. Just empty and render inoperable then tie to dogs collar let him run in backyard or woods when he gets back talk to him about scuffing the gun up and how it’s not the right thing to do. Then you don’t have to feel bad or beat yourself up for putting the first scratch. Yeah, personally I don't worry about dings and scratches,it gives them that "personalized" look. They can help remind you of good times afield. Besides, that's a lot of money for a "wall decoration" .

I look forward to getting it out and using it. If I don't have a use for a gun I usually sell them. I had my 30-06 for a few years, got it in case the SHTF. When they made them legal for deer the first thing I thought of was "hey, now I can actually use it for something" not "darn I hope I don't scratch or ding it",but that's just me,I'm the same way with vehicles .

Hard to go wrong with a Savage. I hunt whitetails with an American Classic in .243. One of my favorites.
Regarding the Model 70, it would definitely go to the woods with me. The stock of my Weatherby Mark V Deluxe proves that. lol Plus if there are no deer I can just sit there and admire my rifle....

Am waaayyyy past the need part, almost same with the WANT part too. Guess I will stick with wanting to try a Tikka T3 Lite or superlight. I have several TC Encores, and they are ok weight wise. But I have handled esshup's lightweight Browning, and it would be a real pleasure to tote around, so thinking I will try that route next, someday. I have a tikka t3 lite in 308 . All I can say is these are fantastic rifles. Great trigger, accurate, and the bolt is absolute butter lol. Also have a ruger American predator in 6.5 that is really sweet to. Hard to choose which will get the love this season

Have used shotgun, .308 pistol, muzzleloader, and bolt rifles in .308 and 30.06 in Indiana. I have a Browning BLR. 308 bought in the 80s. My wife bought me a Leupold 3x9 scope for it. I will use it next year.

A buddy has a T3 in .308 that he uses in Wi for deer. He bought it after dragging around a heavier rifle and he shot my Browning. LOL I like the Browning because you can open the floorplate, remove the magazine and it's unloaded. No shoving the bullets in one at a time when you need to load the gun quick. Just open floorplate, pop in the box mag and close. Cycle bolt and it's loaded.

Just load from the top with the bolt open. Spring loaded bullet retainer. Interesting...

The only thing I don't like about my current savage is the freakin internal mag. It works ok, but I really miss a box mag.

Why have a floor plate if you also have a magazine? Couldn't the magazine be made to fully cover the mag well?

I've got a Browning A-Bolt Medallion. To me, that box magazine on top of the floor plate is a little wierd and unnecessary, just something to lose.

I bought a Ruger American in .270 a few years back that I plan on using this year. It's easy to handle, shoots well with cheap remington core-locks, is dead on at the distances I prefer to shoot, and if I ever decide to go on an elk hunt, I can take it there too!

I bought one in 243 last year, and your description is spot on to my findings. I also used the 270 cal in a different gun to take 3 deer last year. It is quite a barn burner, fast, flat, accurate, and kills like lightening! No wonder it has been such an icon all these years.
