This is the first known case of CWD in reindeer in North America. CWD was detected in a free-ranging reindeer herd in Norway in 2016. Reindeer likely will be added to USDA’s list of CWD-susceptible species. When this happens, Indiana will change the state requirements to include reindeer in the Certified or Registered CWD program. Currently, both programs are optional for reindeer. No evidence exist of CWD being naturally infectious to humans, cattle, or other domesticated animals."
