Been looking for another vehicle and came across some rebuilt vehicles. I know buyer beware.
How hard is the process to get a salvage vehicle retitled as rebuilt? Any inspections for Indiana or Kentucky? I want to buy one but want to figure out a few things before I dive down that rabbit hole.

Whoever repairs it will have to have documentation of all parts used, pictures, vin #s from donor vehicles, etc. Then a police check to verify.
We have had a bunch of rebuilt vehicles over the years, all from the same place, a good friend that is a very reputable business.
Funny story we went thru this once. Somehow the BMV pprocessed a truck with a salvage title for my dad instead of rebuilt status. He bought it from our friend. When my dad went to sell it, the BMV said this is not possible. But, the truck had been plated over 10 years, so they realized it was on them. Long story short, someone screwed up initially and it slipped thru the cracks. It was fixed but a long process, and the buyer backed out. I ended up just buying it myself due to the hassle, and still kept it for years.
Yes, buyer beware, but fear not as long as the vehicle was repaired in good will. Our friend personally drives each one he sells for a few months to make right. Plus he only repairs very low mileage vehicles a year or two old, and thus you are getting an almost new ride.
Good luck.

I've kept several vehicles after deer accidents totalled them. I was able to keep full coverage insurance on them even with a salvaged title

A couple years ago I was in an accident with my 4Runner. The total was enough that Farm Bureau “totaled it”. Kenny Kent would fix it for the same amount. Low Milagros snd I know what I’ve got so I had them fix it. Since it was “totaled” is it a “rebuilt” or “salvaged”.”?

Salvage title can't get plates or insurance. Salvage is what you have after it has been totaled by insurance. Once repaired it can be changed to rebuilt.

I never rebuilt or re-titled my salvaged vehicles from being totalled by deer collisions. On my vehicles it was just body damage that totalled them. The most work that I did to one was replace a side mirror. I kept full coverage on them. My last work car was totalled twice. Once by a large buck and then by a coworker in the parking lot. A $1500 car got me over $5000 in insurance checks in the 2 years I drove it.

Salvage rebuilt titles are not hard to get but you may have to jump through several hoops.
Save all your documentation, photograph in detail the vehicle, you may need a trailer to haul your untitled vehicle to a police inspection.
FYI: rebuilt vehicles have little or no resale value as trade ins. Banks will probably not loan you any money because it's a rebuilt vehicle.
As an auto theft investigator I inspected several hundred salvage rebuilt vehicles and if you do it correctly its an easy process. I have also built STREET RODS and Motorcycles from scratch and had no problem obtaining a assemble motor vehicle titles.

BTW - it’s still insured through Farm Bureau and licensed several times since the accident so I guess it is just a repaired truck

My daughter got ran off the road in an ice/snow storm going back to college after one Christmas break. The insurance "totaled" it because of the repair price. I paid the shop to replace the front bumper and grill and we skipped all the paint work which was the vast majority of the repair estimate. Same insurance company paid it off, deducted the buy back money, sent me the title and a check, and kept full coverage insurance on it. 11&1/2 months later we were rear-ended coming home from her college graduation and a different insurance paid the "totaled" value a second time. I ended up with insurance checks for almost as much as I paid for the car 3 years earlier.

Had something close to that I bought a truck for 5500 probably 15 years ago drove it for two years or more a lady drove up under it at a stop light tore the rear axle out bent the frame my bumper was dang near inside the car her insurance gave me 6000 for it I smiled all the way to the bank
