This past Monday I goose hunted with my older dog out of my blind which is on dry ground next to an open water pond. The temp was 19 degrees with probably a 5 degree chill factor. When I walked into the house the wife picked a live tick off of my dog which had made 4 water retrieves that morning.
Today I shot a young sick raccoon, it could not walk just rolling around real lethargic.

I don't think all those dang ticks ever die off. Though overall a mild winter, we did have a few days of zero weather. Yet there it was.
Is it just me or is it always a raccoon that stumbles out of the brush, in the grip of some disease? Poor thing.

Is it possible for raccoons to contract diseases from ticks?

We had silver maples trees blooming last week. The earliest in 30 years. My friend beekeeping records only went back that far. Typically, its the last few days of February and 1st few days of March. We only had 1 cold freezing spell and it only lasted 3 days. Buy some stock in bug-off.

Last week and this week should be great for the people making maple syrup around here. Daytime highs above freezing, night time temps below freezing.

Supposed to get 5-7 inches of snow here tonight and tomorrow, single digit lows for a couple days. However, the herds of antelope are back at our house WAY earlier than the last couple of years, and they don't really show up until the weather starts changing. May not mean a thing, but if I was betting today I'd say early spring.

If he was lethargic and rolling along it was probably rabies.
I would report it to the dnr so they can track it.
