What are your thoughts on this situation: we ate at a Steak n Shake restaurant today. This is the first time I've ate there in a couple years and things were different than the last time. We ordered and paid on kiosks. There was an option to tip the employees. We got our own drinks and refills. We carried our order to the table. We cleared the table when we were done. The only interaction with an employee was when they called our order number. We did not leave a tip. We talked about it and felt comfortable with that decision. We felt like we did all the work that we used to tip someone else to do.
I used to do valet parking for tips. I feel like I'm a pretty generous tipper. But since covid, there seems to have been a shift to the customer doing more of the work. I'm sure the struggle to get staffing is part of it. I just find it hard to leave a tip in situations like that. What do you guys usually do?

In that situation I’d agree with you. Seems like you did all of the work so I don’t see a tip as necessary. During Covid we did try to eat out local at least once a week and did tip even if we were picking up. I’ve stopped doing that now as it was just a kind gesture for those continuing to work during those times. As long as the waiter/waitress does what they are supposed to I’m at least giving 20%, if they’re really good it will go up from there.

My wife and I eat at Golden Coral in Newburgh, and I understand that with a "All You Can Eat" buffet with multiple tables the waitress/ waiter can be rather busy. IF she/he stays on top of her/his tables I will generously tip, but the longer I have to wait on my sweet tea of the wife's soft drink the less I tip. The service provided to the customer depends on how well the wife and I tip, just saying.

I give tips on the amount of service I receive not on the amount of money I spend …

The restaurant we frequent the most (The Friendship Diner in Evansville) all the servers are great. We are on a first name basis with them. They always get at least a 20% tip from us. At Christmas time we get a little more generous. One of our favorites was having car problems once and I gave her $50 towards the repairs in addition to her tip. She was at wits end on it.
On occasions I also slip a $5 bill to the lady table busser. She works hard too.

My mother was a waitress her entire life until she retired. For that reason, I always tip generously.
However, in your circumstance, I don't feel a tip is necessary.

We felt there wasn't a waitress, only 2 cooks. That was my experience last time I stopped at Steak and Shake in Valparaiso. Three people behind the counter in the kitchen area. No one working the floor.

Usually fast food = no tip. Too many times my order is not complete so this leads to this decision.
I really do not see how fast food can continue to draw customers with the prices they charge.

What you are describing is basically fast food service where tipping is not normally expected.
Totally up to you. We often pick up pizza at a local joint and although there is no table service for carryout I'll often slip a few dollars in the tip jar near register knowing those kids aren't exactly being overpaid.
I usually tip the guys at the drive through car wash and the barber at barber shop also. Do you all do this, or other places?

I tip the woman who cuts my hair $5 every time. Fast food I usually don't tip. If I'm getting carry out from a restaurant I'll leave a couple dollars.

Subway even asks for a tip! I don't tip fast food places. That's what they get paid to do. They're not waiting on tables like a real sit down restaurant.
We went to a concert and wifey wanted a shirt. I paid with card and it had a place to leave a tip amount! REALLY!!! NO way!!!
