I finished a job near Cleveland Ohio and stopped at Culvers in Medina to grab some lunch.
As I was sitting there waiting for my food, a little fella came walking up and climbed up and sat right next to me.
I had no idea who he was. I started talking to him. Asking his name. Where's your mom and so on.
He just sat there quietly and content and didn't say a word. I started looking around to see if anybody acted like they were seeking their lost boy.
Nothing. And then the little fella leaned over and simply rested his head on my arm!
A minute or so later, his Ma comes around the corner, half freaked out and sees her boy. She was all about apologizing.
And then she was like OMG, you look so much like my dad. I think he just thought you were his Grandpa!
So I thought that made for an entertaining lunch.
Then as I'm pulling out from the restaurant, about to turn left onto the 4 laner, I noticed a cart and a bunch of "stuff" to my right in the middle of the road. There was a handicap van backing up down the shoulder.
I decided to creep down the shoulder and help if I could.
It turned out that the fella was handicapped and he had failed to secure his belongings to the wheelchair on his hitchpacker.
I told him to sit tight as I gathered his belongings and put them in his van. Meantime, I had 2 idiots come flying by, one of them honking and the other flipping me off. And I'm frantically trying to get all this stuff back in the van.
Then, I looked up to see a semi coming toward us. The guy put his flashers on and cut his rig diagonally over all lanes as to not allow any other drivers through until I was done.
Trucker and I thumbs upped and he was off. "Good dude!" I thought.
The handicap fella asks were I'm going and I told him I would just turn around in the upcoming parking lot. He says that is where he is going too and he's taking some of his stuff to his booth at the Medina Antique Mall.
I told him I'd pull next to him and give him a hand.
The guy kept thanking me and I could tell he was very appreciative.
Then he says he wants me to pick out anything in his booth as a thank you.
I tried repeatedly to let him know I needed nothing but he was insistent.
As I was looking through his booth which was full of everything from glassware to military items to fishing lures, sports cards, etc.
And I notice he had a glass display case with knives.
I looked for the cheapest thing. I really felt awkward. But he was determined to give me something.
I ended up with this little pocket knife, thinking it'll mean more for the memory than anything!
He gave me a huge hug and then I was on my way!
