I didn't put this in the political thread because it's not a political discussion and I don't want it to turn that way.
For this feeble brain, the math flat doesn't add up.
North East Gasoline Reserves
Some things that I don't know.
In the National Gasoline reserves, how long can the gas be stored without it starting to go bad? I was under the impression that stored gasoline will lose around 3 percentage points of octane after 3 months of storage.
How long does gas last? This is what I have seen, but how true is it?
"That depends on a variety of factors, such as what type of fuel it is and how and where it is stored. Heat, oxygen and humidity all have an impact on the condition of stored fuel.
In general, pure gas begins to degrade and lose its combustibility as a result of oxidation and evaporation in three to six months, if stored in a sealed and labeled metal or plastic container. Ethanol-gasoline blends have a shorter shelf life of two to three months. Fuel stabilized gasoline can last between one and three years under optimal conditions. Gas stored in a car tank begins to degrade in just about a month."
With that information, (true or not) then how long do they store gasoline in the National Reserves, or do they rotate inventory at a certain time?
BUT my real questions come from the linked article. It says that the NGSR has 1 million "barrels" of gasoline (just how many gallons of gasoline are in a barrel? 20? 42?) and that it costs $16 million per year ($0.80 to $0.38/gallon/year) to maintain the facilities? Why not keep the reserve??
So once the gasoline is sold off, do they then sell off the equipment and property?
To me it's silly, like saying "I've only got $5,000 in my savings account, I might as well spend it because it won't help much in a disaster and I've never had to use it before."
