I am Interested in getting a lithion ion 100hr barrery for my boat. It is my understanding that they need to be charged at a higher current than a standard battery charger, thus you need to buy a special charger. Here is where the question comes from. I watched a guy set up a solar system to run lights in his shed and he used a lithium ion battery. So my thought is he will not get the high charge rate from the pannels that he would get from a special charger thus damaging his battery over time. Am I right, wrong, misinformed or just misunderstand what I have read or are there different kinds of lithium ion batteries used in different aspects depending on the available charging system

Thanks. I donot want to spend 2,3 hundred bucks and damage it usedng the wrong charger but I do not want to buy a special charger if I don't have to either

I'm pretty sure some of the newer chargers can detect what type of battery is charging and will deliver correct supply or shut down so it does not damage the battery. If I bought a lithium I would make sure the charger was right. Batteries are expensive and lithium batteries are too much for me right now.

Lithium manufacturers usually say you need a charger specific to lithium needs. I have a Minnkota charger that my battery mfg, Ionic, told me I could use as long as I selected the AGM battery charging profile. If it were me, I would ask the vendor or manufacturer what chargers are acceptable for the battery you are getting.
FWIW, I would not get anything less than a 10A charger...just takes too long to recharge.

Ive only experience with small Lithium batteries that I use with my hummingbird helix 7 for ice fishing. I did have to buy the correct charger. Make's the unit so much lighter for carrying around the lake. My son ruined his first lithium battery my charging it with the wrong charger. By the time he told me it was not taking a full charge and he was using his old charger, it was to late and the battery would never take a full charge even after getting the correct charger for it.
