Dear Brady Campaign
(Formally Handgun Control, Inc.)
I am writing as a citizen of Indiana to express my disappointment at Indiana having received a "D" rating from your organization when it comes to firearms laws. My disappointment comes not so much from the fact that you have given us this rating, but because I regret the fact that an "F" was within our grasp, and we have let it slip away.
We agree that there are some terrible things about Indiana's gun laws. For instance, I agree with you that it is terrible that our Attorney General does not have the authority to "regulate" guns in the name of "consumer safety." This greatly reduces the chance of new "safety laws" coming into existence to hold the right people "accountable." It is also a crying shame that Hoosiers are not required to register all their guns with police! If the government ever needs to confiscate guns from law-abiding citizens, how can this be accomplished? Hitler must be rolling in his grave. ( oh, I forgot, he doesn't have a grave. Perhaps his teeth are chattering in a Russian evidence drawer. ) It is also madness that I can sell my guns to another private citizen without doing a background check on him! I have to admit that I once traded a 44 magnum handgun for hunting rights. Sure, the man I traded with is a former Drill Sergeant who spent a year in Vietnam playing cat and mouse with the Ho Chi Minh, but he didn't pass any background checks! How can we know that it is safe for him to have a gun? Of all the things you mentioned when rating this state, perhaps the most shocking is the fact that Indiana law permits police to carry concealed weapons inside a school! Why would anyone want an officer of the law to be present inside a school with a gun? Madness!
In spite of all these things mentioned above, we still only managed a "D?" I think you are holding back on the F's just to keep hope alive. We all know how the crime rate is spiraling out of control in Vermont, New Hampshire, West Virginia, and Utah. In these states, AK-47-wielding militias roam the countryside in their Toyota pickups, gun battles rage in the streets, and mobs rape and pillage at will, yet they only got a "D" rating! The only state I could find that got a "F" rating was Idaho, and that is kind of a no-brainer for you guys, isn't it? Idaho? The evening news carries stories every day about the state of lawlessness the exists there. Nuns are accosted in broad daylight, babies ripped from their mothers arms---people jaywalk! Idaho makes Somalia look like Mayberry.
Face it, Indiana deserves an "F" but you refuse to give us one. It isn't fair to put us up against the gold standard of Idaho.
I'm a proud Hoosier, and I've really been trying. I own a 12 gauge pump, two .22 rifles, an SKS "assault" rifle, a .50 caliber muzzleloader, a .38 revolver, and an air rifle, to name a few. I have so many guns that I've had to buy a new house so I'll have room to store them all. I have ammunition all over my office. I have pellets for the air rifle on the washing machine so I can zap the starlings in the back yard. I even shoot up in the air on New Year's Eve. What more do I have to do?
Next time, I really think you should give Indiana more consideration when it comes to the "F" rating.
Sincerely,
Eric
