I understand the rules concerning travel along County roadways, how to legally cross the roadways at 90 degrees and such. My question is concerning the use of my ATV while trapping, both on land that I have permission to trap, and traveling from property to property on my ATV along county roadways. I recall reading somewhere that any ATV that was obtained after 2003 MUST be registered with the DNR.......which is where I am confused on the laws. I purchased my Polaris new in 2000, and it's never been registered with Indiana DNR.......so, am I ok to use it along roadways and on private lands WITHOUT being registered since it was "obtained" before '03??? OR do I need to pony up the $$$ for a registration for Indiana?
Also, one more trapping question: I've created a binder that holds all the written permission forms that are signed by the landowners whos property I am trapping on. The law says you have to have written permission to trap/snare...but do I need to carry that written permission with me at all times WHILE trapping that private land? Would having my permission slips in my vehicle or back at home be ok???
Just as a matter of opinion, I think it's a 'crock that Indiana is getting registration money from ATV's when (other than Redbird) you cannot operate quads on State property. Charge a state tax when the ORV is purchased new, but to hit owners up after the fact is nothing more than a money-grubbing scam. (I know you don't make the rules...just adding an editorial) ;D
