Their is a new high school being built somewhat close to a woods that I have been hunting for years. I do not own a handgun so I do not keep up with handgun laws. I have been told that you have to be away at least 1000 feet of a school. So my question is how far away from a school do I have to be to be able to legally hunt deer with a firearm.

As long as you are hunting in a safe manner, there is not a law that I can think of that you would be violating. I suggest that you contact you local officer to see if there are any city/county ordinances that prohibit the discharge of a firearm near the area in question. Possession of a HANDGUN without a permit, within 1000 feet of a school, is a felony.
